If YouTube Studio’s stream-latency setting is greyed out, check the stream type, resolution and ingestion protocol. YouTube does not let you manually change latency for webcam or mobile streams; low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K; and HLS ingestion disables ultra-low latency. For an eligible encoder stream, open YouTube Studio > Create > Go live > Stream (or Manage) and look under Stream Settings > Stream latency.
Why the latency setting is greyed out
YouTube’s manual latency control is for eligible encoder streams managed in Live Control Room. The control is unavailable for webcam and mobile streams, which are set up for interactivity without a manually selectable latency mode.
The stream is 4K
Low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K/2160p. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes 4K streams as optimized for quality at normal latency. If you need a lower-latency mode, use a supported resolution instead. YouTube encoder settings
The stream uses HLS
HLS ingestion turns off ultra-low latency. YouTube explains that HLS sends video in segments rather than continuously as RTMP does, resulting in higher latency. If ultra-low latency is essential, check whether your encoder and stream setup can use a supported protocol instead. YouTube latency settings

How to check and change latency in YouTube Studio
- Confirm the stream type. In YouTube Studio, click Create > Go live. Check that you are setting up an encoder stream in Live Control Room, not a webcam or mobile broadcast.
- Check the resolution. If the stream is 4K/2160p, choose normal latency or change to a supported lower resolution before selecting low or ultra-low latency.
- Check the ingestion protocol. If the stream uses HLS, ultra-low latency is unavailable. Confirm the protocol in the stream or encoder settings.
- Open the latency menu. In Live Control Room, open Stream or Manage (the placement can vary by dashboard view), then Stream Settings. Under Stream latency, choose an available mode.
- Check the preview and stream health. Test with representative audio and movement, inspect the preview, and monitor audio, video and stream health before and during the broadcast. Choose a quality your internet connection can sustain reliably. YouTube live streaming tips
If the stream is an eligible encoder stream, is not 4K when you are trying to use low or ultra-low latency, and does not use HLS when you are trying to select ultra-low latency, YouTube’s published guidance does not identify a universal account or browser error that explains every unavailable control. Confirm those details in the actual stream settings and contact YouTube support with them if the menu remains unavailable.
Which latency mode should you choose?
| Mode | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Broadcasts where quick back-and-forth interaction is not important | Supports all resolutions and live features, and YouTube says it has the lowest viewer buffering. |
| Low | Some audience interaction | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency, according to YouTube. It does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time audience conversation | Most viewers experience less than five seconds of latency, according to YouTube. It does not support 4K, and HLS ingestion disables it. The shorter buffer can mean more buffering. |
Those latency figures are general descriptions, not guarantees for an individual viewer. Actual delay and playback stability can vary with network conditions and other factors. Lower latency leaves less time for the player to buffer ahead, so an unstable connection can make interruptions more noticeable. YouTube stream health guidance

Do not confuse latency with DVR
DVR is a separate setting that lets viewers pause, rewind and resume a live stream; it does not change stream latency. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Turning DVR off also does not prevent viewers from seeing the eventual recording. YouTube DVR settings

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, rather than to broadcast from a camera, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is for prerecorded video, not a camera broadcast, and it does not change YouTube’s eligibility rules for latency modes.
