Windows can turn off the display without putting the PC to sleep, so check those settings separately. If the PC stayed awake, investigate YouTube playback quality and the network instead; sleep is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every interruption.
1. Check whether Windows is sleeping or only turning off the display
First compare the time of the stream interruption with the PC’s power behavior. A dark screen does not by itself mean Windows has slept. Microsoft exposes separate screen-off and sleep timeouts, and the relevant setting may differ depending on whether the laptop is on battery or plugged in.
- Sleep versus display off: Did the PC resume from sleep or show a sign-in screen, or did only the display turn off?
- Power source: Does the interruption happen on battery, while plugged in, or both?
- Lid state: Does it happen only after closing a laptop lid?
- Connection scope: Do other apps or websites lose connectivity too, or only YouTube?
2. Review the sleep settings for your Windows version
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Review the sleep timeout for both plugged-in and battery use, where those options are available. If the display goes dark around the time the stream stops, compare Turn my screen off after with Make my device sleep after. To diagnose whether sleep is involved, you can temporarily set a longer sleep timeout while leaving a shorter screen-off timeout.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. If available, compare the current mode with another option, such as Balanced or Best performance. Make one change at a time and see whether the symptom changes; a less restrictive power mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed YouTube fix.
Microsoft says Best power efficiency limits background activity to reduce power use, while Best performance maximizes performance. Which modes are available depends on the device configuration. See Microsoft’s Windows power-mode guidance and its screen and sleep settings guidance.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Check the separate sleep timeouts for On battery and When plugged in. If your PC offers When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network, note its setting; availability depends on hardware and manufacturer.
- On a laptop, open Additional power settings > Choose what closing the lid does and review the lid-close action.

3. Check the laptop lid and power source
If the stream stops when you close the lid
Test with the laptop lid open. Then inspect the lid-close action in Windows power settings. Many laptops can be configured to sleep when the lid closes, which may interrupt normal network activity. If the problem occurs only with the lid closed, that setting is a stronger lead than a general YouTube playback issue.
If the problem happens only on battery
Compare the battery and plugged-in sleep timers and any available battery network-disconnection option. Change one relevant setting at a time, then observe whether the failure pattern changes. Power-saving behavior can explain a difference between battery and plugged-in use, but does not by itself prove a network fault.

On supported Modern Standby devices, Windows may quiesce network activity during sleep and restore connectivity when the device resumes. Microsoft describes that behavior in its Modern Standby network connectivity documentation. It applies to systems that support Modern Standby; it is not a universal description of every Windows PC.
4. If Windows stayed awake, troubleshoot YouTube and the connection
- In the YouTube player, try a different playback quality and see whether the interruption changes.
- Test another YouTube stream, then try the same stream on another device.
- Check whether other apps and websites also lose connectivity. If they do, investigate the broader connection rather than focusing only on Windows sleep settings.
- If only one stream is affected, compare its playback with another stream, quality setting, or device before attributing the problem to Windows power management.
YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can cause live-programming issues or delays, even when a connection seems good. Its computer playback troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection, trying another quality, and testing another device. These checks narrow down the cause; they do not identify it automatically.

5. Avoid blanket network-adapter changes
Do not assume that disabling network-adapter power management will fix a YouTube interruption. Adapter options depend on hardware and drivers. Microsoft documents features such as device sleep on disconnect and selective suspend, but their existence does not establish a universal solution for live-stream playback. Investigate adapter-specific controls only if the symptoms point to the adapter and the relevant setting is present on your PC. See Microsoft’s network-adapter power-management documentation.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
