If your YouTube live stream has video but no sound, first check whether the encoder’s own output contains audio. If it is silent, fix the selected source, mute state, or routing in the encoder. If it has sound, check YouTube Live Control Room for ingestion errors and compare the dashboard preview with a local recording and the public watch-page playback. For a basic stereo RTMP setup, use one AAC audio stream at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.

Find where the sound disappears

Check the audio at each point in the path: source and mixer, encoder output, local archive, YouTube ingestion preview, and watch-page playback. The first point that is silent narrows the fault. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the sources routed to the encoder and inspecting the local archive; its streaming tips also advise verifying that the archive exists and is growing.

1. Check the source and encoder mix

Confirm that the intended microphone, application audio, mixer, or other audio source is selected, active, unmuted, and routed to the stream mix. Listen to the encoder’s preview or output meter and, if possible, its audio output. If that output is silent, changing YouTube settings will not restore sound: correct the source selection or routing first.

2. Play the local archive

If the encoder records a local archive, play it and confirm that it has sound. A silent archive points to a problem before YouTube ingestion, though it does not identify the exact control at fault. If the archive is absent or its file is not growing during the stream, investigate the encoder’s recording settings as well as the audio path.

3. Compare YouTube preview and watch-page playback

When the encoder output and local archive have audio but YouTube does not, focus on the outgoing stream configuration and ingestion. Check both the Live Control Room preview and the watch page: the preview tests what YouTube is receiving, while watch-page playback confirms what viewers hear. If only one viewer reports silence while others can hear the stream, that viewer may have a local device or internet issue; reports from viewers on different networks point more strongly toward the encoder or stream.

Read the Live Control Room audio errors

Look at the stream health indicator and the associated ingestion messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live streaming error messages identify issues such as no audio stream, multiple audio streams, unsupported codec, incorrect sample rate or bitrate, and too many audio channels. Apply the correction specified by the message, then check whether it clears. A stream with no audio track is an ingestion problem; sending multiple audio streams can cause problems too.

Use a supported RTMP audio configuration

YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs over RTMP/RTMPS. Start with one AAC stream for a straightforward stereo setup. YouTube’s recommended settings are:

Audio setup Codec Sample rate Audio bitrate
Stereo AAC or MP3 44.1 kHz 128 Kbps
5.1 surround AAC only 48 kHz 384 Kbps

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations in its encoder settings guidance, not guarantees that a particular encoder will expose identical controls. YouTube’s error guidance supports mono or stereo (one or two channels) for the indicated ingestion setup and flags more than two channels. If your configuration is unusual, follow the specific Live Control Room message rather than assuming the baseline stereo settings apply.

Check connection and encoder load if local audio is good

If the encoder output has sound but delivery is unreliable, check the encoder’s error messages and CPU load, then test the outbound upload connection. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Include both primary and backup streams in that total if you send both. This is a bandwidth margin recommendation, not an audio bitrate setting.

Retest before the next event

  1. Run a private or unlisted test stream if that suits your channel and event.
  2. Use audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream, and verify sound in the encoder output and Live Control Room preview.
  3. Play the local archive and check the watch page from a viewer’s perspective.
  4. Monitor stream health and audio during the event. YouTube advises testing before going live and checking the stream while it is running.
  5. If the source, archive, output settings, and health messages all look correct but the problem persists, try a different encoder or contact YouTube support.
