If a YouTube live stream is being sent by an encoder on your Windows computer, the computer going to sleep can interrupt the broadcast. In Windows, set the sleep timeout for the power condition you are using—usually while plugged in—to Never or to a duration longer than the stream. You can still let the screen turn off; display timeout and system sleep are separate settings.
Why sleep can take your YouTube stream offline
In an encoder-based setup, the computer runs the software that sends video to YouTube. YouTube’s setup process has you configure the encoder with the server URL and stream key. If that computer sleeps, do not expect its encoder to keep sending the live feed. This is a consequence of the encoder’s role and Windows sleep behavior, not a claim that every stream failure has the same cause. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the setup workflow.
Turning off the display is different: Windows can switch off the screen while leaving the computer awake. To keep an encoder running, change the sleep setting, not necessarily the screen setting.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake while streaming
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents these controls in its Windows 11 power settings guide.
- Under the power condition you will use, such as When plugged in, set Make my device sleep after to Never or to a duration longer than the planned broadcast.
- If the stream might run on battery, set the battery sleep timeout separately. A plugged-in setting does not necessarily change the on-battery setting.
- Set Turn my screen off after independently to your preference. The screen may turn off while the computer remains awake.
- Start a short broadcast and confirm the computer stays awake and the encoder remains connected.
Windows timeout choices and labels can vary by device. Microsoft’s examples distinguish Modern Standby and S3 devices: for Modern Standby, the cited default sleep timeouts change from 4 to 3 minutes on battery and from 10 to 5 minutes when plugged in; for S3, they change from 15 to 10 minutes on battery and from 30 to 15 minutes when plugged in. These are Microsoft-described device-category defaults, not universal settings or recommended streaming durations; the page does not state a publication year.

Check laptop lid and power-button actions
A laptop may sleep when its lid closes even if its idle sleep timer is set longer. Microsoft notes that many laptops and tablets sleep when the lid is closed or the power button is pressed. Before streaming with the lid shut, inspect the lid-close and power-button actions in Windows power settings. Depending on the device and Windows version, these options may be under Additional power settings. See Microsoft’s shutdown, sleep, and hibernate guidance.
Windows 10 power settings
- Open Settings > System > Power & sleep. The exact labels can differ by Windows build and device.
- Adjust the sleep timeout for the power condition in use; check both plugged-in and battery values if either may apply.
- Use the separate screen timeout if you want the display to turn off without putting the computer to sleep.
- If the laptop sleeps when you close the lid or press the power button, inspect Additional power settings and the associated lid and button actions.
Microsoft’s guidance on sleep and power behavior covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; the available controls depend on the device.

If the stream still disconnects while the PC stays awake
Do not assume every disconnection is caused by sleep. If the computer remains awake, check the encoder’s connection status, YouTube’s live control room, and network stability as separate possibilities. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS for encoder connections.
- The PC is sleeping: verify the timeout for the active power condition and check lid or power-button actions.
- The PC stays awake but Wi-Fi drops: investigate the network connection. Microsoft documents Wi-Fi power-saving options for some Windows configurations; those options do not prevent system sleep. See Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance. Labels and availability vary.
- The encoder loses its YouTube connection: confirm the encoder is configured with the intended server URL and stream key, then check its status and YouTube’s live status. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe those connection details.
Windows away mode is not a general workaround for keeping an encoder live. Microsoft describes it for cases where media applications need background work while the computer appears asleep and cautions against using it unnecessarily, particularly on portable computers.
