If your YouTube live stream goes offline just as your VPN reconnects, first restore OBS’s default network binding, then test the stream briefly with the VPN disabled. OBS identifies VPN software as a possible cause of an unstable connection to the streaming server, but the timing alone does not prove which VPN setting or route is responsible. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide recommends both checks.
Why does my YouTube stream disconnect when my VPN reconnects?
OBS sends the stream from your computer directly to the streaming service’s ingest server; OBS does not relay it. A VPN reconnect can affect the network path used by that connection, leaving OBS unable to maintain a stable route. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate, and enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection.
A VPN reconnect happening at the same time is a useful clue, not a confirmed diagnosis. If the stream also fails with the VPN off, look beyond the VPN route: check the connection to YouTube’s ingest service and whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS describes its software as extremely unlikely to be the cause of dropped frames.
Fix OBS network binding and test the VPN connection
- Note what happens at the disconnect. Record whether OBS reports dropped frames, a disconnection, or both, and whether the issue starts immediately after the VPN reconnects. This pattern helps distinguish a connection interruption from a stream that cannot sustain its bitrate.
- Set OBS to its default network binding. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Set Bind to IP to Default, then apply the change. OBS recommends this as a connection troubleshooting step.
- Test without the VPN. Temporarily disable the VPN and stream again under otherwise similar conditions. If the stream stays stable, the VPN path is implicated; this test does not identify a specific VPN setting that will fix it. Consider the privacy and security consequences before leaving the VPN off.
- If the VPN appears involved, inspect its routing options. Look for documented split-tunneling or route-persistence controls in the VPN client for your operating system. The exact options and steps vary by client, and there is no established universal recipe for routing OBS around a reconnect. Before changing anything, decide whether the VPN must remain active for OBS traffic and what route the stream should use after reconnecting.
- If the VPN-off test also fails, investigate the wider connection. Check whether your network can sustain OBS’s configured bitrate and whether it can reach YouTube’s ingest service reliably. A VPN reconnect may be coincidental if the stream drops without the VPN as well.

Windows: Network Optimizations and TCP pacing
On Windows, OBS’s troubleshooting guide offers Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as optional tests. Some users report improvement, but OBS presents these as troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes. Change them one at a time and check whether the reconnect-related failure changes.

Dynamic bitrate
Dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate during congestion, which may help OBS keep transmitting when the connection cannot sustain the configured rate. It does not repair the underlying connection problem, and lower bitrate reduces video quality. Treat it as a possible way to limit bitrate-related interruptions, not as a fix for an unstable VPN route.
Should you change YouTube’s ingest protocol or server?
YouTube supports multiple ingestion protocols, including RTMPS, and OBS lists YouTube RTMPS endpoints. That establishes protocol availability, not a remedy for a route interruption when a VPN reconnects. The available documentation does not establish that switching protocols or selecting a primary or backup endpoint will preserve a broadcast across a local route change. Try those options only when you have a separate reason to investigate ingest compatibility; do not assume they resolve the VPN issue.

Common troubleshooting outcomes
- Stream stabilizes with Bind to IP set to Default: Keep that setting and observe whether the problem recurs during a VPN reconnect.
- Stream stabilizes only with the VPN disabled: The VPN path is a likely factor. Check the client’s documentation for routing or split-tunneling options, but do not apply settings based on instructions for a different operating system or client.
- Stream still drops with the VPN disabled: Check the connection to YouTube’s ingest service and whether your available connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
- Dropped frames appear before disconnection: Treat them as a sign of an unstable or insufficient connection rather than proof of an OBS software fault.
- A protocol or endpoint change seems tempting: YouTube and OBS document available ingest options, but the sources do not establish that changing them fixes a VPN route interruption.
