Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If a YouTube live stream freezes just as FFmpeg switches to a playlist video with different dimensions, treat the transition as a clue—not proof of a specific YouTube fault. Check whether FFmpeg is copying video instead of scaling it, compare stream properties and timestamps around the boundary, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. A useful first test is to re-encode the playlist to one stable output resolution and frame rate, then verify that YouTube’s ingest settings match the outgoing stream.
First determine what is changing at the freeze
A change in input resolution can expose a mismatch or discontinuity in the outgoing stream, but the symptom alone does not establish the root cause. FFmpeg may be passing through a changed stream configuration, or the freeze may coincide with timestamp, media, connection, or encoder trouble. Compare the actual FFmpeg logs with YouTube’s stream-health messages before attributing the fault.
- Identify the ingest protocol. Check whether FFmpeg sends RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. The protocols have different requirements; HLS segment rules do not apply to an RTMP diagnosis.
- Save the command and logs. Keep the complete FFmpeg command and the log covering the transition. Note the freeze time so you can compare it with YouTube’s Live Control Room messages.
- Compare the playlist items and output. Inspect dimensions, codec and profile, pixel format, frame rate, timestamps, and audio layout or sample rate where reported. Look for decoder, filter, encoder, or muxer warnings at the boundary.
- Check YouTube’s stream status and health. FFmpeg continuing to run does not by itself show that YouTube is receiving and accepting valid stream data.
Without the command, media metadata, ingest protocol, stream-key settings, logs, and YouTube health messages, it is not possible to distinguish a resolution-transition problem from other causes in a particular stream.
Check whether FFmpeg is stream-copying
If the video output uses -c:v copy or an equivalent stream-copy setting, FFmpeg passes compressed packets through rather than decoding, filtering, and encoding them. That avoids the filtering and re-encoding path, but it cannot scale varying inputs to a common size. FFmpeg documents output frame sizing with -s as inserting the scale filter at the end of the filtergraph; scaling therefore requires filtering rather than simply copying the video.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
For a diagnostic test, transcode the playlist through an explicit filter chain that produces one chosen output size and pixel format. Choose a size appropriate for the source material and intended stream; do not assume that selecting an output size alone fixes timestamps or every other stream change. Review the resulting output and logs at the transition.
What to keep stable
- Output width and height, frame rate, and codec configuration.
- Audio stream layout and sample rate, where the playlist items differ.
- GOP and keyframe cadence across transitions.
- Continuous, valid timestamps and an output that does not produce filter, encoder, or muxer warnings.
Keeping these properties stable is a diagnostic recommendation, not a claim that YouTube rejects every midstream change. If fixed-size transcoding does not resolve the freeze, investigate other evidence-supported possibilities in the logs, including timestamp discontinuities, malformed media, connection interruption, encoder overload, or changes in audio or video streams.

Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube Help recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default: “By default (recommended), YouTube will automatically detect your resolution and frame rate.” Check the stream configuration associated with the stream key in Live Control Room. If you configure resolution and frame rate manually, make sure those settings agree with the stream FFmpeg actually sends.
For API-configured streams, YouTube’s Live Streaming API uses variable for automatic detection. The resolution and frame-rate settings must be configured together: automatic resolution requires cdn.frameRate to be variable, and variable frame-rate detection likewise requires variable resolution. The API also exposes statuses such as active, error, inactive, and ready, which can help distinguish a running local encoder from a stream YouTube is receiving and accepting.

RTMP/RTMPS settings
For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—not more than four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; consult its current table for the actual output mode rather than applying those example figures to another codec or resolution.
These settings are worth checking when diagnosing a boundary freeze, but they do not establish that a resolution change itself caused the failure. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current recommendations.

HLS settings are different
If the ingest is HLS, use YouTube’s HLS checklist rather than the RTMP checklist: TS segments must be 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist can have no more than five outstanding segments, requests use HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte ranges are not allowed. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. These HLS requirements are not a fix for an RTMP stream.
See YouTube’s ingestion protocol documentation for protocol details and its encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS settings.

Run a controlled test before the production stream
- Use representative playlist files, including the differently sized items that precede and follow the freeze.
- Test with the proposed fixed-size, fixed-frame-rate output and matching YouTube configuration.
- Include representative sound and moving video. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement before a broadcast.
- Record the time of any freeze, then compare FFmpeg’s messages at that time with Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- If the problem remains, change one variable at a time—such as the transcode/filter path or ingest configuration—so the next test gives you useful evidence.
Do not infer a single cause from a freeze alone. A useful diagnosis needs the full FFmpeg command and version/build, metadata for the playlist files, protocol, stream-key settings, logs around the transition, and YouTube’s health messages.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos, preserves their uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start your free first day.
