If YouTube removed your live stream for copyright, first check the notice: a Content ID claim, a copyright removal request that resulted in a strike, and a Community Guidelines action are different processes. For a copyright strike, YouTube lists three routes: complete Copyright School and wait for expiry if eligible, ask the claimant to retract the removal request, or submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or your use qualifies for an exception. A counter notification is a legal request, not a routine appeal.
First identify what YouTube did
Read the notice in YouTube Studio and the email from YouTube. Check the named content, claimant, action, and any deadline. The process depends on whether the notice is for a Content ID claim, a copyright removal request, or a Community Guidelines issue; the copyright-strike routes below do not apply to every kind of restriction.
- Content ID claim: YouTube says Content ID claims do not result in a copyright strike. A claim appeal is separate from a counter notification. YouTube says the claimant ordinarily has seven days to respond to a claim appeal; if the appeal is rejected, the claimant may submit a copyright removal request.
- Copyright removal request and strike: This is a legal request. If YouTube accepts it as valid, the content is removed and a copyright strike is applied. A counter notification is the process for seeking reinstatement after that removal.
- Community Guidelines action: This is not a copyright removal request. Follow the process stated in that notice rather than filing a copyright counter notification.
These distinctions and timelines are described in YouTube Help. Its interface labels and instructions can change, so use the current notice as your operational guide.
What a copyright takedown can mean for a live stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube also says an active live stream removed for copyright can result in a strike and a seven-day restriction on live-streaming access.

A licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption. YouTube says the rights owner should add your channel to its Content ID allowlist when you have licensed the material. Without that allowlisting, a stream may still be interrupted, even if you restrict it to territories where you have the necessary rights. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends.
Choose the route that matches your notice and situation
| Route | When it may fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Wait for expiry | You do not pursue a counter notification and meet YouTube’s eligibility conditions. | YouTube says the strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. Expiry does not restore the removed stream. |
| Ask for a retraction | You can contact the person or organization that submitted the removal request and seek withdrawal. | The claimant decides whether to retract; YouTube does not guarantee agreement. |
| Submit a counter notification | You have a good-faith basis to believe the removal was mistaken, the material was misidentified, or an applicable copyright exception covers the use. | This is a legal request that YouTube shares with the claimant. Consider the personal-information disclosure and possibility of legal action before filing. |
YouTube says three copyright strikes within 90 days can make a channel subject to termination. Treat that as a serious channel risk, not a reason to file a counter notification unless you have a sound basis for doing so.
If the removal is scheduled but has not taken effect
Check whether the notice says removal is scheduled. YouTube says this gives you a seven-day window to act before the removal and strike take effect. Follow the options in the notice; a counter notification is not available until the removal is effective. Do not confuse this window with the seven-day response period for a Content ID claim appeal.
Before submitting a counter notification
YouTube describes a counter notification as a legal request to reinstate content removed because of a copyright removal request. File one only if you believe the removal was mistaken. YouTube identifies misidentification and possible copyright exceptions, including fair use, fair dealing, or public domain, as potential grounds; none guarantees that your stream will be reinstated.

- Review every element of the stream. Check not only the main video or performance but also background music, artwork, clips, and other material. Confirm that you own the relevant rights, have permission covering the use, or have a plausible applicable exception.
- Compare your facts with the actual notice. Make sure you understand what was removed and who submitted the request. A credit line or a short excerpt does not by itself establish that a use is lawful.
- Consider disclosure and legal risk. YouTube says it must share the counter notification with the claimant. If you are concerned about disclosing personal information, YouTube says an authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit it by email, fax, or mail.
- Submit accurate information only. YouTube warns that misuse of the process or false information can lead to account termination or other legal consequences. If the facts or legal basis are uncertain, consider advice from an India-qualified copyright lawyer before filing.
After YouTube forwards the counter notification, it says the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action. This is YouTube’s stated platform timeline, not an Indian court deadline. If YouTube does not receive evidence within that period, the content may return and the strike may be removed; if legal action is pending, the content stays down. A return is not guaranteed.
How India’s fair-dealing provision may matter
Section 52(1)(a) of India’s Copyright Act, 1957 includes fair dealing with a work (other than a computer programme) for private or personal use, including research, criticism or review, and reporting current events and current affairs. Those are statutory purposes that may be relevant to a particular stream; the provision does not establish that any specific broadcast qualifies.
Rank #4
Whether an exception applies depends on the facts, including the purpose, the work, and how it was used. Do not treat the US term “fair use” as the Indian statutory test, and do not assume that attribution or using only a brief clip automatically makes a broadcast lawful. YouTube’s platform decision is not a case-specific legal determination under Indian law.
What to do next
- Save the notice and identify whether it describes a claim, an effective removal and strike, a scheduled removal, or a different policy action.
- Note the dates and deadlines stated in the notice, and use YouTube’s current instructions for that specific action.
- If you have a licence, verify that it covers the relevant material, livestream use, and territories; ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- Choose expiry, a retraction request, or a counter notification based on your circumstances. Do not submit a legal counter notification merely because the stream is important or the strike is inconvenient.
Or let it run in the cloud
Once you have confirmed that the material is cleared for use, StreamNeo can keep an uploaded video or playlist looping on YouTube: upload it, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not grant copyright permission or resolve a strike, and you should not use it to rebroadcast disputed material. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
