For a mostly static bhajan stream, start with 720p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a bitrate between 3 and 8 Mbps. Choose 1080p30 at 5–14 Mbps if the artwork or visuals need more detail and your upload connection can sustain it. These are YouTube’s general encoder recommendations, not a bhajan-specific optimum. For any resolution, use a 2-second keyframe interval, test the actual setup, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance provides the figures and configuration details.

Recommended bitrate settings for a bhajan stream

Use the H.264 rows below as starting points for the encoder’s feed to YouTube. The minimum and recommended values are YouTube’s general live-ingestion guidance; the recommended value is not a requirement, and the best practical choice depends on image detail and a stable upload connection.

Input format YouTube minimum YouTube recommended When it fits
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps A still devotional image, album art, or simple looping visual
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps Detailed artwork or visuals where extra resolution is useful
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps Motion that benefits from 60 fps; usually unnecessary for a static image
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps More detailed, faster-moving visuals, with greater bitrate demand

The 60 fps figures are included for comparison. A higher frame rate does not improve a still image, and it can raise the bitrate YouTube recommends. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, but the table above is specifically for H.264 input. See YouTube’s current encoder settings table for its codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-dependent recommendations.

Configure the encoder

Video

  • Resolution and frame rate: Set 1280×720 at 30 fps for the lower-motion starting point, or 1920×1080 at 30 fps if the source visual warrants it.
  • Codec: H.264 is a documented, broadly supported option for YouTube Live.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) and select a value within the relevant range in the table. If the connection cannot sustain the selected rate, reduce it or choose a lower resolution rather than relying on an unstable feed.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure option among RTMP-family protocols.

Audio

YouTube lists AAC and MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended audio input and that playback is clear before leaving a long session unattended. The protocol and audio guidance is in YouTube’s encoder settings documentation.

How much upload speed do you need?

Your connection must reliably upload the encoder’s outgoing stream at the chosen video bitrate, with capacity left for audio and normal variation in network conditions. YouTube’s cited encoder guidance gives bitrate recommendations but does not establish a universal upload-speed multiplier for every connection. Test the actual upload path and configuration rather than treating a speed-test result as a guarantee. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into playback formats for different devices and network conditions, so the encoder bitrate is not the bitrate every viewer must receive. YouTube’s live streaming guidance recommends testing and watching stream health.

Test before the continuous broadcast

  1. Set the encoder to the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format.
  2. Run a test with audio and motion similar to the planned bhajan broadcast; a still-image test alone may not reveal issues in the real source.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health messages while the test is running. If the feed is unstable, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.
  4. During the live session, continue monitoring stream health and messages. A successful short test is useful, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits

Replays and archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping the replay matters, record a separate local copy and consider ending and restarting the broadcast before the session exceeds 12 hours. That approach creates separate sessions rather than one uninterrupted archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Viewer rewind

DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers rely on rewinding to hear a particular bhajan, account for that limitation when deciding whether to run one long session or schedule shorter sessions. YouTube documents the limitation in its DVR settings guidance.

Check music rights before going live

The devotional subject matter does not by itself make a recording copyright-free. Rights can depend on the specific recording and performance, as well as the music and other material used in the stream. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content; if copyrighted material remains in the feed, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Its livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights, including relevant rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other participants.

Keep the stream running: do it yourself or use the cloud

YouTube supports encoder workflows using streaming software or a standalone hardware encoder. A dedicated encoder is optional, not a requirement; verify any hardware model’s compatibility and suitability for continuous use before buying it. Whichever encoder you use, the settings and monitoring steps above still apply. YouTube describes software and hardware encoder workflows in its encoder setup instructions.

Troubleshooting bitrate and continuous-stream problems

Symptom Likely issue What to try
YouTube reports an unstable or poor stream health The upload path may not consistently sustain the selected feed bitrate, or the encoder settings may not match the connection’s practical capacity. Test again, lower the CBR bitrate within the applicable range, or reduce resolution; then watch stream health during another test.
Video looks soft despite a high bitrate The source artwork may not contain more detail, or the chosen resolution may not suit the visual. Check the source dimensions and choose 720p30 for a simple visual or 1080p30 when the artwork benefits from detail. Do not raise frame rate for a static scene expecting it to sharpen the image.
Audio is missing or distorted The encoder may be using the wrong input or an unsuitable audio configuration. Verify the intended audio source, then check that stereo audio is set to AAC or MP3 at YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
The stream is interrupted after copyrighted music is detected The recording or performance may not be cleared for the channel, or a rights owner may not have allowlisted a licensed channel through Content ID. Stop using material without confirmed rights; for licensed third-party material, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
A long stream has no replay, or rewind is unavailable The session exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary or encountered the long-session DVR limitation. Keep a separate local recording if a replay matters; consider shorter sessions if archive capture or rewind is important.
