Find the first place the sound disappears before changing settings: play the source recording, inspect the encoder preview and local archive, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages. A gap in the recording needs a source fix; a gap introduced by the encoder calls for checking its audio routing and operation; a clean encoder output shifts attention to the connection and YouTube’s incoming stream.
1. Locate where the audio dropout begins
Choose a passage where viewers reported missing sound and compare that same moment at each stage. This is a practical way to apply YouTube’s advice to inspect the sources routed to the encoder and check the local archive.
- Play the source recording. Listen around the reported timestamp. If the audio is already missing here, replace or repair the recording; changing a streaming bitrate cannot restore sound that is absent from the file.
- Check the encoder preview. If the recording is clean but the preview is not, inspect the media source, selected audio track, source routing and any audio processing in the encoder.
- Inspect the encoder’s local archive, if available. Compare it with both the source and preview. A dropout in the archive points toward the encoder or its input path; a clean archive with problems reported by viewers suggests checking the outbound connection and YouTube’s ingest health.
- Note who hears the problem. A dropout reported by one viewer may be local to that viewer. If many viewers on different internet connections report it, YouTube advises inspecting the encoder. Reports from several viewers sharing one connection are less conclusive about whether the problem is at the encoder or on that shared connection.
For a file with multiple embedded audio tracks, verify that the encoder is routing the intended track. As a practical isolation test, try one intended track in a private or unlisted rehearsal. YouTube’s error guidance for the ingestion configuration it describes warns about multiple audio streams; the exact applicable configuration depends on how you deliver the stream.
2. Read the YouTube Live Control Room health message
Open the event in Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator. Record the exact message and the time it appeared, then address the named issue rather than changing unrelated settings. YouTube describes red errors as critical, potentially preventing an event from starting or causing viewer problems, and yellow errors as moderate issues that can degrade quality.

- No audio stream: Check that the encoder is sending audio and that the selected source or file track is active.
- Multiple audio streams: Check the encoder’s output tracks and remove unintended streams if the active delivery configuration requires one.
- Unsupported audio codec: Match the codec to the requirements for the protocol and ingestion configuration in use.
- Too many channels: Check whether the stream is expected to be mono or stereo; do not send multichannel audio into a configuration that rejects it.
- Incorrect sample rate or audio bitrate: Compare the encoder values with YouTube’s recommendations for the applicable audio format.
YouTube’s live error guidance identifies these audio-specific ingestion faults. The exact error shown in Live Control Room should take precedence over a general setting recommendation.
3. Check the audio format and encoder settings
For general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended stereo settings are 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for a dropout caused by a damaged source or an encoder fault.

Check that the encoder is sending the intended track and a supported number of audio streams. If the source, preview or local archive already contains the interruption, changing sample rate or bitrate alone is unlikely to resolve its cause.
4. Inspect the encoder before blaming the network
If the encoder preview or local archive sounds wrong, investigate the source path and encoder first. YouTube recommends checking the audio and video sources routed to the encoder, encoder errors and CPU load, and the local archive file. Update outdated encoder software. If those checks do not explain a degraded encoder output, trying a different encoder can help isolate the problem.

- Confirm the intended file and audio track are selected and remain available throughout playback.
- Review encoder logs or status messages at the dropout timestamp.
- Watch CPU load during the affected passage, especially if the encoder is also processing video.
- Check whether the local archive is intact and whether its file size continues to grow during the stream.
5. Investigate the connection when encoder output is clean
If the source, preview and local archive are clean, test whether the outbound upload connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends choosing a quality setting reliable for the available connection and testing upload bitrate. Its recommended video bitrate varies by ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the current YouTube settings table for the combination you selected rather than relying on one universal number.
- Run a test stream using the intended video quality and representative audio and motion.
- Watch Live Control Room health messages during the test and note when any errors appear.
- If connection limits or stream health point to an unsustainable upload, reduce the video settings to a combination the connection can maintain, then test again.
- If practical, test a wired Ethernet connection in place of Wi-Fi. This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a fix for a corrupted recording, incorrect audio track or encoder fault.
Do not change video bitrate just because the audio is cutting out: first confirm that the encoder output is clean and that connection or ingest evidence supports a network-related cause.

6. Rehearse and monitor the pre-recorded program
Before the full event, test with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. Check the Live Control Room preview, the local archive’s integrity and growth, and whether the event’s watch page is accessible. Monitor audio and video quality throughout the test and keep the stream-health indicator visible during the actual event. YouTube’s guidance is straightforward: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream” and “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.”
