To run a children’s story playlist continuously on YouTube, create a live broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and send it through an encoder. Set the audience accurately: if the stories are directed to children, mark the stream Made for Kids. Plan for a local recording, because YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours, and very long streams may not offer full DVR rewind.
Before you set up the stream
- Confirm the channel is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable and test well before launch.
- Choose an encoder that can play the prerecorded stories continuously and reconnect or restart if the feed fails. YouTube’s encoder directory lists third-party products, including cloud services; its listings are not endorsements or guarantees of continuous operation.
- Prepare a local recording and a continuity plan. A single stream intended to run around the clock may not produce a complete YouTube replay.
- Check that you have the rights to the stories, music, illustrations, and other material you plan to broadcast. YouTube’s reviewed setup guidance does not establish copyright clearance for your specific content.

How to create the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create or schedule the broadcast and choose the encoder workflow.
- Set the audience. In the stream settings, select whether the content is Made for Kids. You are responsible for setting this accurately; a playlist title or automated classification does not replace your decision.
- Copy the ingest details. Get the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room and enter them in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube documents RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Configure the encoder. Use a supported video codec, an audio codec such as AAC or MP3, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Set resolution and bitrate to suit the source and connection. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are ingest recommendations, not mandatory settings for every story stream. Check the encoder’s supported settings, run an upload-speed test, and leave bandwidth headroom rather than using the entire measured capacity.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder feed, inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and fix any warnings before starting the broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Confirm that the program is playing correctly, then check the encoder and Live Control Room for interruptions. Make sure the encoder can recover from a dropped connection and that someone can respond if playback stops.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the complete supported formats and bitrate guidance; available controls can vary by account and encoder.
Made for Kids: what changes for viewers
YouTube says content is Made for Kids when children are its primary audience or when it is directed to children based on factors such as subject matter and emphasis on children’s characters, themes, toys, or games. Children’s stories intended for children should be designated accordingly. If the right setting is unclear for a particular program, consult YouTube’s audience-setting guidance or qualified counsel; this is not a legal determination for a specific story or jurisdiction.

On Made for Kids content, YouTube limits data collection and does not serve personalized ads. It also disables features including live chat, live chat donations, notifications, comments, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and Save to playlist/Watch Later. Plan announcements and viewer instructions around those limits: do not rely on chat for interaction or tell viewers they can save the live stream to a playlist.
Will YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to keep a complete archive of a continuous 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Record the program locally if you need a dependable copy, and arrange how the encoder will restart or continue playback if the broadcast is interrupted.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- You cannot start a live stream: verify channel eligibility and whether live streaming has been enabled. Initial enablement can take up to 24 hours; restrictions in the previous 90 days can also affect eligibility.
- The preview is blank or the feed will not connect: check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key, that the key has not been replaced, and that the encoder is using a supported ingest protocol. Keep the key private.
- The stream health shows instability: reduce the bitrate or resolution, check upload speed, and retain bandwidth headroom. Confirm CBR encoding and the two-second keyframe interval, then test again before relaunching.
- The live feed stops: inspect the encoder and network connection, then reconnect using the current stream key and verify the preview before resuming. A continuous setup needs a recovery plan; a playlist alone does not ensure the encoder stays connected.
- Viewers cannot chat or save the stream: these features are disabled for Made for Kids content. Do not change the audience setting merely to enable them; the audience designation must reflect the content.
- No full replay appears afterward: streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep and verify a local recording rather than treating YouTube’s archive as the sole copy.
