For a 1080p aquarium loop sourced at 30 frames per second, start with H.264, CBR, RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval, and 14 Mbps video bitrate. Use 1080p60 only when the source and desired motion justify it and your upload can sustain YouTube’s higher 17 Mbps H.264 recommendation. Test the full stream before relying on it: a continuous stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and its DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
Recommended 1080p settings for an aquarium loop
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, checked in 2026; they are ingestion guidance, not a guarantee that your internet connection will reliably carry the stream. Match output frame rate to the source where possible. For a typical 30 fps aquarium recording, 1080p30 is a practical starting point, especially when movement is gentle. That is a practical choice, not a YouTube requirement.
| Setting | 1080p30 starting point | 1080p60 alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps, when the source is 30 fps | 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps, when the source or desired motion rendering calls for it |
| Video codec | H.264 | H.264 |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended by YouTube |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS preferred | RTMPS preferred |
| Color and audio starting points for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR; stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR; stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps |
YouTube also accepts H.265/HEVC and AV1, and its encoder settings cover frame rates up to 60 fps. These are alternatives only if your encoder supports them reliably; H.264 is a straightforward baseline. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different playback formats for viewers. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Choose 30 fps or 60 fps
Use 1080p30 when the source is 30 fps
For a recording made at 30 fps, keeping the output at 30 fps avoids asking the encoder to create extra frames. Aquarium footage with slow movement often does not need 60 fps. The key practical constraint is maintaining a stable upload at the bitrate you choose, with capacity beyond the nominal video bitrate for audio and network variation.

Choose 1080p60 for a real motion or source need
Use 60 fps if the original footage is 60 fps or if smoother motion is an intentional part of the presentation. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate rises from 14 Mbps at 1080p30 to 17 Mbps at 1080p60, so confirm your sustained upload can handle the higher rate before committing. The listed minimums—5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60—are not the recommended targets for a dependable setup.
Set up the YouTube encoder and test it
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check access to live streaming in YouTube Studio before configuring a long-running broadcast.
- Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the stream’s Live Control Room and locate its server URL and stream key. Use the stream key in your software or hardware encoder; it works like a password, so do not share or publish it.
- Enter the encoder settings. Select RTMPS where available, H.264, 1920 × 1080, the frame rate matching your source, CBR, the appropriate YouTube-recommended bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. For an SDR feed, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR; set stereo audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps if sending stereo audio.
- Check upload capacity and start a test. Test the actual connection from the computer or encoder that will run the stream. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of continuous upload performance. Use representative aquarium movement and the intended audio, and let the test run long enough to reveal instability.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Start the encoder, confirm that YouTube receives video and audio correctly, and monitor the preview and health indicators before selecting the control to go live. YouTube recommends testing in advance and checking audio/video quality and stream health.
- Keep a local recording if the footage matters. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; do not rely on a continuous 24-hour broadcast to produce a complete replay.
YouTube describes software encoding as a general route and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. A hardware encoder is optional, not a requirement for an ordinary aquarium loop. General live-stream setup guidance is in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
For a single uninterrupted stream, YouTube says automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed full-length replay. If preserving the recording is important, keep a local recording and make a separate plan to retain or publish the footage. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Viewers also may not be able to pause and rewind through the full duration of a continuous long stream: YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This affects viewer control even when the live broadcast itself remains online. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Check rights and monetization before looping footage
Use aquarium video and audio that you have the necessary rights to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches; it may replace a stream with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate it if the material remains. A Content ID claim can also be made after the stream ends if it is archived. YouTube’s live-stream terms require providers to have the necessary rights for their live content. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and the YouTube Terms of Service.
If you intend to monetize through the YouTube Partner Program, the channel and stream remain subject to YouTube’s monetization policies. YouTube says content should be original and authentic, rather than mass-produced or repetitive. That policy alone cannot determine whether a particular aquarium loop will pass review: the footage, presentation, channel context, and meaningful creative or educational value all matter. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies, which note a clarification dated July 15, 2025.

Ways to keep the stream running
For a self-managed stream, use the encoder workflow above: your software or optional hardware encoder sends the video to YouTube, and the computer and connection running it must remain available. For a cloud alternative, StreamNeo is #1: it keeps uploaded video looping on YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded recordings and playlists, not a camera-based live feed. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. There is one free day per account with no card required. Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube reports an unstable stream or dropped frames: check sustained upload capacity, reduce the bitrate if the connection cannot maintain the recommended target, and retest. Confirm CBR and that the output frame rate matches the source.
- The stream does not appear in the Live Control Room: verify the server URL and stream key, confirm the encoder is running, and check that the stream key was copied correctly. Treat the key as a password; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Video looks wrong or motion is uneven: check that the output resolution and frame rate match the source and that the selected codec is supported by the encoder. Avoid forcing 60 fps for a 30 fps source without a reason.
- Viewers report missing audio: confirm that audio is enabled and that the encoder is sending the intended stereo format and sample rate. Check the Live Control Room preview during the test.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: a continuous stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived. Keep a local recording and do not depend on YouTube to save the entire 24/7 session.
- The stream is interrupted after a content match: review the video and audio rights for every item in the loop. YouTube may replace, interrupt, or terminate a live stream because of third-party content matches.
