Preserve the film’s 23.976 fps cadence if your encoder supports it, but test before relying on it. YouTube’s published encoder guidance does not specifically confirm 23.976 fps as an accepted incoming rate: its bitrate table is organized around 30 and 60 fps, while the Live Streaming API lists 30fps, 60fps, or variable. For a cautious setup, use the 30 fps bitrate row for your resolution and codec as an approximation, then check stream health in a test broadcast.
Can YouTube Live accept a 23.976 fps stream?
YouTube’s general encoder guidance says frame rates up to 60 fps, but does not name 23.976 fps. The YouTube Live Streaming API documents cdn.frameRate values of 30fps, 60fps, and variable; it does not expose a dedicated 23.976 option. These documents do not establish that YouTube rejects fractional-rate input, either. Treat exact 23.976 fps ingestion as unspecified, not guaranteed or prohibited.
If your encoder offers 24000/1001 (usually displayed as 23.976 fps), keeping that output rate preserves the source film’s cadence and avoids an unnecessary frame-rate conversion. Send a test stream and inspect the incoming stream status before scheduling the full playlist. YouTube’s Live Control Room detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically by default; a custom stream key can enable manual resolution settings. YouTube also transcodes the live input into viewer-facing formats. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance
Recommended encoder settings
| Setting | Suggested configuration |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation. Its encoder settings also list RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. |
| Frame rate | Use progressive 24000/1001 if available and if the test stream is healthy; otherwise use an output rate your encoder and workflow support. Exact 23.976 fps ingestion is not specifically confirmed in YouTube’s documentation. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Advanced video | Square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit. |
| HDR | YouTube recommends H.265; its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
| Audio over RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1, AAC only, with 48 kHz and 384 kbps listed. |
These settings follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. Its bitrate values are grouped by resolution and 30/60 fps—not 23.976 fps—so the 30 fps figures below are a practical reference, not a platform-published 23.976 recommendation.

Choose a bitrate for the resolution and codec
For a 23.976 fps film, use the corresponding 30 fps row as a cautious starting point. The figures are YouTube’s stated minimum and recommended bitrates for 30 fps; they are not bespoke settings for fractional frame rates.
| Output | Codec | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Choose a rate your actual upload connection can sustain reliably, with enough headroom for normal variation. Run a speed test and test with representative film motion and audio; a nominal bitrate that your connection cannot maintain is not a safe choice. Test the complete playlist before going live
- Set up the stream in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule the live stream in Live Control Room, then copy its stream key into the encoder. YouTube’s encoder onboarding explains the setup: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure and start a private or unlisted test. Use the intended protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. Confirm the Live Control Room receives the expected resolution and frame rate and shows healthy stream status.
- Run the actual playlist through its transitions. Check file changes, audio continuity, any gaps or black frames, and what the encoder does when the final file ends. YouTube’s technical guidance does not specify how third-party encoders schedule, loop, or transition a multi-file film playlist; verify those behaviors in the encoder you will use.
- Watch stream health and playback. Test representative movement and sound, check for buffering or dropped input, and confirm that the viewer output behaves acceptably before the scheduled broadcast.
Make sure you have the rights needed to distribute every film and audio track in the playlist. The technical encoder settings do not determine whether a particular work may legally be streamed.
Latency, DVR, and HLS considerations
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between capture by the encoder or camera and presentation to a viewer. Lower latency can increase buffering, so if the playlist does not involve live audience interaction, minimizing latency may be less important than reliable playback. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume the event. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

If your workflow uses HLS ingestion, YouTube’s HLS guide supports frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends media segment durations of one to four seconds. Shorter segments can reduce latency but increase rebuffer risk and reduce encoding efficiency. HLS segment duration is a separate setting from the encoder’s two-second keyframe interval; do not treat them as interchangeable. Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS
Common problems and fixes
- The stream does not start or the incoming rate is unclear: fractional-rate ingestion is not specifically documented. Confirm the encoder is sending, check the Live Control Room’s stream status, and test with a supported output option if needed.
- Health warnings or unstable playback: verify the selected bitrate against a speed test and use a lower rate if the connection cannot sustain it. Recheck protocol, codec, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance.
- A playlist transition causes silence, a gap, or a frozen image: test the complete sequence in the same encoder and playback configuration, including file boundaries and end behavior. Playlist scheduling and transitions depend on the encoder workflow rather than a YouTube frame-rate setting.
- Playback buffers despite a healthy-looking encoder: review the chosen latency mode and viewer connection conditions. Lower latency can increase buffering; choose settings appropriate to whether real-time interaction matters.
