For a 1440p (2560 × 1440), 30 fps YouTube Live feed, set the video bitrate to 15 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 21 Mbps for H.264. YouTube lists minimums of 5 Mbps and 7 Mbps, respectively. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the full stream bitrate. For prerecorded playlists, an encoder or cloud service must send the videos as a live feed; a YouTube watch-page playlist is not itself a live encoder.

Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1440p at 30 fps

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives different bitrate recommendations depending on the ingest codec. These are live-stream ingestion values, not recommendations for uploading prerecorded video files.

Setting Recommended value Notes
Resolution and frame rate 2560 × 1440 at 30 fps YouTube detects these automatically by default. To set them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
Video bitrate: AV1 or H.265/HEVC 15 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum YouTube’s live encoder settings for 1440p/30 fps.
Video bitrate: H.264 21 Mbps recommended; 7 Mbps minimum YouTube’s live encoder settings for 1440p/30 fps.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Use the same interval throughout the stream.
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to Google’s servers.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo 128 Kbps is listed in YouTube’s advanced guidance YouTube supports 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit HDR settings differ: YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.265 and 10-bit for HDR.

YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live feed into multiple viewer formats. You send one chosen input stream rather than a separate rendition for each viewer.

Calculate upload capacity before going live

Plan for at least 20% upload headroom above the total outgoing bitrate. Include audio and any backup feed when calculating the total; do not rely on download speed as a substitute for outbound capacity. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate with a speed test and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

As a planning example, a 21 Mbps H.264 video setting needs more than 21 Mbps of available upload capacity once audio and the recommended headroom are included. Use the actual full stream bitrate when checking your connection.

What “playlist streaming” means

Prerecorded videos sent as a live feed

If you want a sequence of prerecorded videos to appear as one ongoing YouTube Live broadcast, software, hardware, or a cloud service has to send that feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup guide identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 live streaming prerecorded videos. It also lists the AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder and says its PlayToStream functionality schedules prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. These listings establish that YouTube names those options; they do not establish their current prices or comparative reliability.

YouTube content playlists and HLS media playlists are different

A playlist on a YouTube watch page organizes videos for viewers; it does not turn those videos into an encoder input. An HLS Media Playlist is a technical manifest listing the media segments that make up a continuous decodable stream. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide supports Media Playlists and says Master Playlists are ignored. It requires one encoded stream at the highest desired resolution, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and a persistent connection. That HLS meaning is distinct from a sequence of videos in a YouTube content playlist.

Set up and test the stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. The channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Obtain the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and reset it if compromised. YouTube explains stream setup in its encoder guide.
  3. Configure your encoder. Set 1440p/30 fps and choose the codec-specific bitrate from the table above. Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMP or RTMPS, and an appropriate audio format. Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder.
  4. Test with representative content. Use audio and motion comparable to the planned feed. For a prerecorded playlist, check its highest-resolution source, audio continuity, transitions, and any blank or incompatible items. These playlist checks are practical workflow advice, not a YouTube-prescribed test list. YouTube’s own instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  5. Check preview and stream health. Confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room before starting a scheduled broadcast. Monitor audio, video quality, upload capacity, and stream health while it runs; YouTube’s streaming tips recommend monitoring stream health and messages.
  6. Choose latency and DVR settings deliberately. Latency is the delay between capture and playback. YouTube notes that lower latency may increase buffering, and it matters less when viewers do not need to interact with the broadcast. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume the live stream. See Manage live stream settings.
  7. Check archive expectations. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its encoder setup page does not promise automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. Plan your own recording and archive workflow if the broadcast may exceed that duration.

Common problems and fixes

  • Bitrate is unstable or the stream buffers: Check outbound capacity rather than download speed, include audio and any backup feed in the total, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the outgoing bitrate if the available upload cannot sustain the selected setting.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check that the encoder is sending the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate; verify CBR and the keyframe interval; then inspect Live Control Room messages and test again before the event.
  • The encoder does not connect: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder. Protect the key, and reset it in YouTube if it may have been exposed.
  • The playlist has silent gaps, blank sections, or abrupt transitions: Inspect every source and transition in the actual feed, especially the highest-resolution files and audio continuity, before scheduling a long broadcast.
  • A stream is not archived as expected: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. For a longer stream, do not assume an automatic archive will be available.
