For a 1080p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream using H.264, set OBS to 1920×1080 at 30 fps, then use H.264 with CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and 14,000 Kbps video bitrate if your connection can sustain it. YouTube lists 5,000 Kbps as the minimum and 14,000 Kbps as the recommended H.264 live-ingest bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. These are starting settings, not a guarantee: test your actual stream and lower the bitrate if you see connection-related dropped frames.
Recommended OBS settings at a glance

The bitrate figures above are specifically for YouTube Live’s H.264 ingest, not for uploading a prerecorded video. YouTube’s live table lists different 1080p30 figures for AV1/H.265, so do not apply those numbers to an H.264 encoder. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Configure video output in OBS
- Open Settings → Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080.
- Set Common FPS Value to 30.
- Keep the Base (Canvas) Resolution appropriate for your scene or composition. If it differs from 1920×1080, OBS scales the scene to the output; choose a downscale filter suited to that scaling.
The output resolution is the size OBS sends to YouTube. It does not require the canvas to be 1920×1080 if your scene is composed at another size.
Set H.264 streaming output
- Open Settings → Output and select the Streaming section. Interface labels and encoder choices can differ by OBS version, operating system, and hardware.
- Select an available H.264 encoder.
- Set Rate Control to CBR.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies that the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Set the video bitrate to 14,000 Kbps if your connection can sustain it. If it cannot, use a lower bitrate and test for stability; YouTube’s published minimum for H.264 at 1080p30 is 5,000 Kbps.
- For stereo audio, use AAC or MP3, with 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz as YouTube’s listed guidance.
Optional advanced video settings
YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit color. It also lists CABAC, two B-frames, and one reference frame; retain those codec options only if the selected encoder supports them. The exact controls and names depend on the encoder and OBS build.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In OBS, select YouTube as the service, or enter the stream URL and key provided by YouTube.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. Use the YouTube connection details supplied for your stream.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live controls before streaming again.
- YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. Manual resolution selection is optional and uses a custom stream key with manual settings in Live Control Room.
With automatic detection, the settings you configure in OBS determine the outgoing feed; YouTube can transcode it into formats for viewers. The bitrate set in OBS is the source-feed bitrate, not a promise that every viewer will receive playback at that exact bitrate.
Test the stream and adjust bitrate
- Before the broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. YouTube specifically advises testing with comparable audio and motion.
- Start a test stream and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Also watch OBS for dropped frames.
- If OBS reports dropped frames, determine whether the upload connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce the bitrate and test again.
- Keep the highest bitrate that remains stable in your real streaming conditions. Reducing bitrate can reduce image quality, so check the picture as well as connection health.
The 14,000 Kbps recommendation is not a guarantee that a particular network, computer, encoder, or OBS build will perform reliably. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide explains connection-related dropped frames and troubleshooting. YouTube’s test advice is in its encoder settings guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- Dropped frames: Your connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the set bitrate. Lower the bitrate, test again, and monitor stream health.
- Resolution or frame rate differs from the intended output: Recheck Settings → Video and confirm the output resolution and Common FPS Value. YouTube uses automatic detection by default; manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key and manual Live Control Room settings.
- The stream will not connect: Check that OBS is using the YouTube service or the current stream URL and key from YouTube. Confirm RTMPS details if using the manual connection method, and replace a key that has been exposed.
- Encoder options are missing: Available encoders and controls depend on your operating system, hardware, OBS version, and selected encoder. Use an available H.264 encoder and apply the settings it supports.
- Picture quality is poor after stabilizing the stream: A lower bitrate can reduce quality. If your connection allows, increase it gradually and retest rather than jumping straight back to a rate that caused dropped frames.
