Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf YouTube Live reports an invalid stream key when you start FFmpeg, first copy the key for the intended stream from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and replace the value FFmpeg is using. If you suspect the key is stale, reset it there, then update FFmpeg with the new key. Check the server URL and key placement separately: some configurations use separate fields, while others combine the ingestion URL and stream name.
Fix the stream key first
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live, select the stream, open its Stream tab, and copy the stream key shown there. YouTube recommends obtaining a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder reports an error on start. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.
- Replace the key configured in FFmpeg. Make sure you update the actual value used by the process you are starting—not just a saved value in a separate wrapper, script, or service. A key copied from another stream, an old configuration, or a different channel may not match the stream you intend to start.
- If the key may be stale or exposed, reset it. Reset the key in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in FFmpeg with the newly issued one. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings. Treat the key as a secret and do not publish it or share logs that reveal it.
Check the server URL and key fields
The server URL and stream key are distinct values, even though a particular encoder interface or command format may combine them. YouTube’s encoder setup directs you to enter the server URL and stream key in their corresponding fields; its API documentation also notes that some encoders require the ingestion URL and stream name to be joined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. See YouTube’s encoder setup and the LiveStreams API reference.
- Confirm that the URL is YouTube’s ingestion/server URL for the stream, not the key itself.
- Check how your FFmpeg invocation or wrapper expects the values: separate URL and key inputs, or a URL with the stream name appended.
- Do not append the key twice. If your wrapper already adds the stream name to the URL, supplying it again can produce a malformed destination.
- If the key contains shell-sensitive characters and you pass it through a shell, check that quoting and escaping preserve the value. The precise syntax depends on the command and shell; without them, there is no single safe FFmpeg command to prescribe.
Distinguish a credential rejection from a connection problem
An explicit invalid-key response points first to the credential or where it was entered. SSL/certificate errors and timeouts instead suggest that FFmpeg may not be reaching YouTube over the expected transport. For RTMPS, Google specifies an RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Its RTMPS ingestion guidance notes that an invalid certificate can indicate an RTMP endpoint being used for an SSL connection, while a timeout can indicate cleartext RTMP sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. In a custom client, server-name indication (SNI) handling can also matter.
Use the exact error text to choose the branch. A transport failure is not proof that YouTube rejected the key, and an invalid-key response is not by itself evidence of a TLS problem.

| Symptom or check | What to verify | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube explicitly says the key is invalid | Wrong, stale, copied incorrectly, or misplaced key | Copy or reset the key for the intended stream in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg; verify the URL/key arrangement. |
| SSL or certificate error | RTMP endpoint used for an RTMPS connection, or certificate/TLS handling | Check the RTMPS endpoint and client TLS/SNI configuration against Google’s RTMPS guidance. |
| Connection timeout | Wrong protocol or endpoint, port, or outbound connectivity | Confirm RTMPS and port 443 where applicable, then check network access to the ingestion endpoint. |
Check stream settings only after the connection is accepted
Video settings matter for whether YouTube can ingest and maintain a healthy stream, but they are not the first fix for a credential rejection. After the key and connection are accepted, compare FFmpeg’s output with YouTube’s published encoder settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; its published guidance supports up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate ranges depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so choose from the applicable row in YouTube’s current settings rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
If the key looks right, narrow down the remaining cause
- Read the complete FFmpeg output and YouTube response. Separate an explicit key rejection from a DNS, connection, timeout, TLS, or certificate failure.
- Confirm which channel and stream the copied key belongs to, and whether the running FFmpeg process is actually using the updated value.
- Check that the server URL uses the expected protocol and that the key is supplied in the format your command or wrapper expects.
- Update the encoder if it is outdated. If the connection starts but the stream is unhealthy, inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, then check source quality, CPU load, and outbound upload connectivity as YouTube recommends in its troubleshooting guide.
- If the error persists, retain the exact error text and a redacted command/configuration for diagnosis. Do not include the stream key. The FFmpeg version, transport, command, and server response are needed to identify command-specific syntax or an account-level issue.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a 24/7 YouTube channel that plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option after your YouTube stream setup is ready: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not diagnose or repair an invalid key; you still need a valid key from Live Control Room.
