If YouTube warns that it is receiving insufficient video data while you stream from OBS, the message alone does not tell you why. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS Statistics first: network-dropped frames point to delivery problems, while rendering or encoding lag points to OBS or your computer. Then verify the output settings and test again before changing several things at once.
What the warning means—and what it does not
YouTube’s visible warning can vary by interface and language. “Insufficient video data” is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it does not automatically mean your bitrate is too low. The stream may be failing somewhere along the network path, OBS may not be rendering or encoding frames fast enough, or the output settings may not match what YouTube expects.
Use the status indicators to choose the right troubleshooting branch before lowering bitrate or changing encoder settings. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain, testing your upload bitrate, and checking the stream before the event with representative audio and video movement. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Start with a controlled test
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Open the stream’s health status and read any accompanying messages. Note whether the stream fails to start, stalls, disconnects, or stays live with degraded health.
- Open OBS Statistics during the test. Distinguish network-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag. These categories point to different parts of the pipeline.
- Record your current output configuration. Note resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, encoder, keyframe interval, and whether OBS sends directly to YouTube or through a relay or multistream service.
- Test with representative content. Use the scenes, motion, and audio you expect during the actual stream. A static desktop is not a useful test of a demanding game scene or media-heavy layout.
Change one relevant setting at a time and repeat the test. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped or merely coincided with a temporary improvement.

Use OBS Statistics to identify the failing branch
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | First useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped frames or unstable transmission | The path from OBS to YouTube, including available upload capacity and network stability | Test upload stability, reduce the stream’s data demand if needed, and check whether other transfers are competing for upload. |
| Encoding lag or an “encoding overloaded” warning | Local encoding performance | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then simplify demanding scenes or free up resources. |
| Rendering lag | Local rendering or GPU pressure | Reduce graphics load and simplify expensive sources, filters, and scenes. |
| No clear OBS performance warning, but YouTube reports poor stream health | Output configuration, the ingest path, or a problem not isolated by these indicators | Compare OBS output with YouTube’s recommended settings and test a direct, stable connection where practical. |
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance discusses resource constraints and recommends reducing frame rate or resolution and simplifying scenes when performance is the issue. It specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. These adjustments address local rendering or encoding pressure; they do not add upload capacity. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
If the network path is the problem
Check sustained upload capacity, not just a peak result
Run an upload speed test and pay attention to stability, not only the highest number it reports. Compare the stream’s configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected. A recommendation is an encoder setting, not proof that your connection can sustain it reliably.

- Lower the configured bitrate or output quality if your connection cannot reliably carry the current stream.
- Avoid large uploads, downloads, cloud backups, or other transfers competing for upload during the test.
- If Wi-Fi instability appears to be involved, try wired Ethernet where practical. A wired connection is a conditional troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for every network issue.
Account for every outgoing stream
If you multistream, include every outgoing feed in your upload-capacity calculation. Also check whether the relay or multistream service is receiving a healthy feed from OBS. A relay adds another point to inspect; the warning by itself does not establish that the relay is the cause.
If OBS is struggling to render or encode
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps. Retest the same scene and watch the OBS lag indicators.
- Reduce local graphics load. If you are streaming a game, limit its frame rate or reduce graphics settings so OBS has more resources available.
- Close known GPU-heavy applications. Close only applications you recognize as demanding and do not need during the stream.
- Simplify the scene. Remove unnecessary complexity and test with fewer expensive capture, media, or browser sources and filters.
Do not treat these performance changes as a remedy for network-dropped frames. If OBS’s rendering and encoding indicators are healthy but transmission is unstable, return to the network branch.

Verify YouTube ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs. Use a codec your encoder and workflow support, and consult YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
| H.264 output format | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations in its live-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, not guaranteed connection speeds or a promise that a particular stream will be stable. For other formats and codecs, check the current YouTube table rather than assuming the H.264 figures apply.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Lowering bitrate before checking OBS Statistics: This may not help if the actual issue is encoding overload or rendering lag.
- Increasing bitrate to chase a warning: A higher bitrate increases network demand and can worsen a stream if upload capacity is the constraint.
- Changing several settings at once: You lose the ability to identify which change affected the result. Record the original configuration and test one change at a time.
- Assuming Ethernet fixes encoding lag: Wired networking is relevant when Wi-Fi or the network path appears unstable, not when OBS cannot render or encode fast enough.
- Testing with an easy scene only: Use representative movement, sources, and audio so the test resembles the stream you plan to run.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are troubleshooting because you want a pre-recorded YouTube stream to stay live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than an OBS performance fix. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plans. To try it, start your free first day.
