Back up the replay first: as of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes can no longer be undone with the former “Revert to original” feature.
Before you edit: confirm the replay and make a backup
In YouTube Studio, check that the old live stream appears as a replay in your channel’s content. A live stream is not guaranteed to become an available replay: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive of live streams.
Download a copy before editing if you may need the original. YouTube also points to Google Takeout as an option for downloading videos. This matters because YouTube says the former “Revert to original” option can no longer undo Studio Editor changes as of June 2025. Remove dead air from the existing replay in YouTube Studio
- Open the replay. On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content from the left menu, and click the live replay you want to edit.
- Open the editor. Select Editor, then choose Trim & cut.
- Choose the type of edit.
- For dead air at the beginning or end, drag the blue selection handles so the selected region contains the footage you want to keep.
- For a pause in the middle, select New cut. Position the red box over the dead-air segment and confirm the cut.
- Set precise times if needed. Use the start and end time fields to mark the boundaries of the section to remove.
- Preview before saving. Check the cut and surrounding footage carefully. Save only when the preview shows the intended result.
YouTube’s trim feature is documented for videos shorter than six hours. YouTube says that channels outside the YouTube Partner Program may be unable to save changes to unedited videos with more than 100,000 views; face blurring is the stated exception. Check whether your replay meets these limits before spending time marking cuts. YouTube Help: trim your videos.

What this edit changes—and what it does not
Trimming changes the existing replay. YouTube says the video keeps its URL, views, and comments after a trim. That is different from making a highlight or clip: Highlights creates a shorter highlight from a stream, including after it has ended, while clips and Shorts extract selected portions as separate content. Those options do not remove a pause from the original replay. YouTube Help: trim your videos, YouTube Help: create a highlight, YouTube Help: create clips.
If Studio’s editor is unavailable or your replay is outside the documented duration limit, you can download a copy, remove the gap in an external editor, and upload the result as a new video. YouTube does not let creators replace a video in place: the new upload gets a new URL. Keep the original until you have checked the new upload and its playback. YouTube Help: trim your videos.

Troubleshooting common editing problems
- The replay is missing. Confirm that YouTube archived it. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; if there is no replay to edit, check for a local recording.
- Trim & cut will not save. Check the duration and view-count limits: the documented trim feature is for videos shorter than six hours, and some unedited videos over 100,000 views cannot be changed by channels outside the YouTube Partner Program, except for face blurring.
- You are worried about losing the original. Stop before saving and download a backup or use Google Takeout. Saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone using the former revert feature as of June 2025.
- You need to remove a pause, not publish a shorter version. Use New cut within Trim & cut. A highlight or clip creates separate content rather than cleaning the original replay.
- The cut preview removes the wrong moment. Adjust the handles or time fields and preview again. Do not save until the preview retains the intended material on both sides of the cut.
Or let it run in the cloud
