Live Redirect and a pinned chat message do different jobs. YouTube documents Live Redirect as a handoff that happens after the originating live stream or Premiere ends. A pinned message is a signpost inside the current stream’s live chat. If your 24/7 stream never ends, the documented Live Redirect trigger has not occurred; pin a message to guide viewers who are using chat, but do not treat it as an automatic redirect.
How the two features differ

Does Live Redirect work if the 24/7 stream never ends?
YouTube’s documented trigger is the end of the originating stream or Premiere. Its guidance does not describe Live Redirect activating while a broadcast remains continuously live. So if the channel’s current stream stays live, do not plan on Redirect to move viewers during that uninterrupted broadcast.
A 24/7 channel can still use Redirect for a planned handoff: end one broadcast and send viewers to a selected eligible destination. If the aim is to give viewers an instruction or destination without ending the current stream, a pinned chat message is the documented fit—but it reaches viewers through chat, not through an automatic transition.
When to choose each option
- Keep an instruction visible in the current stream’s chat: pin a message. Only one message can be pinned at a time, and only the creator—not moderators or viewers—can pin, replace, or unpin it.
- Hand viewers to a different stream or Premiere when a broadcast ends: use Live Redirect, provided the sending and receiving channels meet the requirements and settings below.
- Route viewers while the 24/7 broadcast remains live: the cited YouTube guidance establishes no automatic handoff for this case. A pinned message can provide a signpost to chat users, but cannot initiate a redirect.
- Manage a reconnect or session transition: verify behavior on the channel rather than assuming either feature will persist or retrigger. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify what happens to pins or redirects across encoder disconnects, stream restarts, or session changes.
Set up a Live Redirect for an end-of-stream handoff
- Check sender eligibility. YouTube Help currently says the sending creator must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s Live Redirect Help page before scheduling a handoff.
- Confirm the destination permits redirects. The receiving channel controls who may redirect to it. YouTube documents settings that allow channels the creator subscribes to, all channels, or specific channels. The manual allowlist can include up to 100 channels; the all-channels option cannot be combined with the other listed permission approaches.
- Choose the destination in YouTube Studio. On the originating live stream or Premiere, open Customization → Redirect, then add a Premiere or select another channel’s live stream as the destination.
- Tell viewers what to expect. The destination handoff occurs after the originating stream or Premiere ends. Viewers who have autoplay disabled may need to click the play button to start the destination.
TeamYouTube’s May 3, 2022 announcement said channels of any size could receive redirects and described a subscription-permission default involving public subscriptions. That is dated supporting context; use the current Help page and the receiving channel’s current Studio settings as the authority for a planned handoff. See the TeamYouTube announcement.

Pin a message in the current live chat
- Open the live chat for the stream or Premiere.
- Post the instruction or destination you want chat users to see, or select a viewer’s message.
- Use the message’s menu to pin it. YouTube permits only one pinned message at a time; pinning another replaces the existing pin.
- To change or remove the pin, use the creator account. Moderators and viewers cannot pin, replace, or unpin a message.
A pinned message is not a substitute for a handoff: viewers must see and act on the chat instruction themselves. YouTube’s live-stream guidance describes live chat as part of the stream experience; see Learn about live streams.
What YouTube’s documentation does not establish for 24/7 transitions
The cited official guidance does not say whether a pinned message survives an encoder reconnect, whether a session transition counts as an ending for Live Redirect, or whether Redirect automatically restarts or retriggers after a transition. If your channel relies on any of those behaviors, test the exact workflow on that channel before depending on it. The sources also provide no comparative click-through or audience-retention data for pins versus redirects.

Keeping the broadcast online is a separate problem
Neither a pinned message nor Live Redirect is a way to keep a broadcast running continuously: one adds an in-chat signpost, while the other handles an end-of-stream handoff.
