For a YouTube Live product demo, use OBS Media Source when you need to play one supported media file in a scene; choose OBS’s VLC Video source when the scene needs a playlist. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed, with 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Neither source is documented as faster or more reliable than the other.

How to choose between OBS Media Source and VLC Video

Decision OBS Media Source VLC Video
Best fit Adding an individual supported audio or video file to a scene. Adding media as a playlist in a scene.
Playlist support No playlist capability is described in OBS’s documentation. Playlist items, order, looping, and shuffle controls are available.
VLC installation No VLC dependency is stated. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS; match the architecture. 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Visibility and playback behavior Options include restarting playback when the source becomes active and closing the file when inactive. Options include continuing, pausing, or stopping when the source is not visible.
Format support OBS lists common built-in formats, including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Uses VLC libraries for extended media support; OBS does not promise that every VLC-compatible format will work.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation distinguishes VLC Video by its playlist capability. It describes features and settings, not a head-to-head performance test, so there is no documented basis for claiming one source has better image quality, lower CPU use, less latency, or greater reliability.

Add a single media file with OBS Media Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene for the product demo, then use the Sources dock’s add button and choose Media Source.
  2. Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the media file. OBS documents support for common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
  3. Set the playback behavior for the demo. The documented defaults are Restart playback when source becomes active: On, Close file when inactive: Off, and Show nothing when playback ends: On. Change them if the demo needs different scene-switching or end-of-file behavior.
  4. Preview the scene and check that both video and audio play as expected before going live.

Add a playlist with OBS VLC Video

  1. Install VLC before adding the source. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; OBS says the VLC Video source will not show up unless VLC is installed.
  2. In the Sources dock, add VLC Video to the demo scene.
  3. Add the media items to its playlist and arrange them in the required order. Use Loop Playlist if it should repeat or Shuffle Playlist if order should vary.
  4. Choose what happens when the source is not visible. OBS’s documented defaults are loop on, shuffle off, and stop when not visible then restart when visible. These are defaults, not necessarily the right settings for every demo.
  5. Preview the scene and verify that the playlist advances, repeats or shuffles as intended, and that its audio is audible.

OBS does not guarantee universal compatibility for files merely because VLC can open them. Test the actual media and source configuration in the scene you plan to stream.

Test the scene before the YouTube Live demo

OBS recommends testing stream settings before going live in its Quick Start Guide. For a product demo, run through the exact scene and media behavior you will use: confirm playback, check audio, and switch away and back if visibility changes matter. If the demo depends on a specific playlist order or a file ending cleanly, include that behavior in the test.
