If one video in your YouTube Live loop sounds louder or quieter than the next, first find out whether the difference is in the source files or is being introduced by your encoder and audio routing. Compare the same transition in the original videos, the encoder feed, YouTube Live Control Room preview, and a local archive. Fix the source or signal path where the mismatch appears, then test and monitor the loop. YouTube’s viewer-side Stable volume setting may help some viewers, but it does not repair the stream itself.

Find where the volume changes

Use the same playlist transition for each check. Keep playback volume and listening equipment unchanged; otherwise a device-level adjustment can make the comparison misleading.

  1. Play the source videos back-to-back. Listen to the end of one clip and the start of the next at the same player and device volume. If the jump is already there, the mismatch is in the media or playlist mix.
  2. Listen to the encoder feed. If the source files sound consistent but the encoder output does not, inspect which audio sources are routed into the encoder and check for encoder errors or high CPU load.
  3. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Compare the same transition there with the encoder feed. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and monitoring stream quality.
  4. Review a local archive. If the archive also contains the jump, it is present in the stream output rather than only in one viewer’s playback. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and archive when stream sound is bad.

YouTube’s live-stream guidance says to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” Listen across transitions, not just to one clip in isolation. If the stream still sounds wrong after checking routing, encoder condition, and the archive, YouTube suggests trying another encoder. Fix the source or stream path

If the mismatch is in the source videos

Even out the clips in the audio or video preparation workflow, or adjust the playlist mix, before sending them to the encoder. Recheck the transition in the prepared media. The goal is for adjacent clips to have a consistent perceived level; the official YouTube material cited here does not prescribe a target loudness or a particular normalization process.

If the mismatch appears in the encoder output

Inspect the encoder’s selected audio inputs and routing. Confirm that the intended audio source is active and that an unintended source is not being mixed in. Check encoder status or error messages and CPU load, then listen again to the output and a local archive. Change one part of the signal path at a time so you can identify whether it affects the transition.

Test the complete loop before relying on it

Run a test stream, preview it in Live Control Room, and listen through the playlist transitions before starting a long-running loop. Continue monitoring audio and video quality while live. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring streams.

What YouTube’s audio settings do—and do not—fix

Stable volume is a viewer-side adjustment

YouTube says Stable volume is on by default where supported and adjusts playback to reduce quiet-to-loud variation. It is not available for every video, and it does not change the source files or fix the stream mix for all viewers. A viewer can look for it under the video’s Settings menu and toggle it if available. See Control video volume on your device — Computer.

Voice boost is a separate playback option

YouTube describes Voice boost as reducing background sound and highlighting vocals. Availability varies, and Stable volume turns off automatically while Voice boost is on. It is not a substitute for matching source levels.

HLS audio numbers are not loudness targets

YouTube’s HLS encoder guidance lists these audio format recommendations:

Audio format Sample rate Bitrate
Stereo 44.1 kHz 128 Kbps
5.1 surround 48 kHz 384 Kbps

These are HLS ingestion recommendations, not a published loudness-normalization setting and not a fix for clips that already have different levels. The cited official guidance does not establish an integrated loudness target, true-peak ceiling, compressor ratio, limiter threshold, or normalization recipe for playlist transitions. Avoid treating an invented LUFS or peak number as a YouTube requirement. See Set up an HLS stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the uneven levels are in the playlist files, a cloud loop will not automatically correct them: prepare or mix the audio consistently first. For the streaming side, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without leaving a computer or home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud.
