If your YouTube Live stream looks pixelated at 1080p, first check the encoder’s actual codec and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps; for AV1 or H.265, it recommends 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps. Then verify constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a stable upload connection. These are live-ingestion settings—not YouTube’s recommendations for uploaded videos.

Check the bitrate for your codec and frame rate

“1080p” alone does not determine the right bitrate. In your encoder, confirm whether the outgoing video is H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 and whether it is 30 or 60 frames per second (fps). Compare those settings with YouTube’s live-stream figures below. YouTube Help’s current encoder settings table was retrieved in 2026; YouTube does not state a publication year for that table. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Resolution and frame rate Codec Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p at 30 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 2 Mbps 6 Mbps

The minimum is not the recommended target. If you are below the recommendation, especially with fast movement or a 60 fps stream, insufficient video bitrate is a plausible cause of blockiness or loss of detail. Raising the encoder bitrate helps only if your connection can reliably carry it.

Verify the encoder’s other live settings

Set rate control to CBR

Choose constant bitrate (CBR) for the live video stream. The video bitrate should match the codec and frame-rate row above rather than a generic 1080p preset.

Use a 2-second keyframe interval

Set the keyframe frequency to 2 seconds and do not let it exceed 4 seconds. Check the encoder’s keyframe interval or GOP setting; the wording varies by software.

Confirm protocol and codec

YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported streaming protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Make sure you are reading the bitrate row for the codec the encoder is actually sending, not simply the codec you intended to select.

Test whether your upload connection can sustain the setting

A bitrate that looks right in the encoder can still fail if the connection’s upload capacity fluctuates or is insufficient. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and running a test before going live. Use a test stream with movement and audio similar to the real broadcast, then monitor stream health and any messages in YouTube’s Live Control Room.

  1. Test the connection: Run an upload speed test and assess whether the available upload capacity can reliably sustain the stream setting. YouTube’s guidance is to test upload bitrate; it does not provide a universal connection-speed margin in the cited settings.
  2. Run a representative stream test: Before the event, send the planned resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, movement, and audio to YouTube. Check stream health and messages rather than relying only on the encoder’s “connected” status.
  3. Reduce the demand if the feed is unstable: Lower the frame rate or resolution, then use the corresponding bitrate from YouTube’s table. For example, 720p may be a practical fallback when your connection cannot reliably sustain 1080p.
  4. Retest after each change: Confirm the incoming stream is stable at the new setting before using it for the event.

If you suspect Wi-Fi instability, testing over a wired connection may help isolate the issue. An Ethernet cable is only a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix or a specific YouTube recommendation.

Separate encoder-side pixelation from viewer playback

First inspect the incoming feed and stream health. Low bitrate for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and amount of motion can reduce detail; an unstable or under-capacity upload connection can also compromise the feed. If the incoming stream looks healthy, consider playback conditions: YouTube transcodes live video into different output formats for viewers using different devices and networks. The encoder’s 1080p setting therefore does not guarantee that every viewer receives or watches the same rendition. YouTube’s live streaming guidance

Ask a viewer to check the playback quality selected in the YouTube player and compare playback on another device or network. If only one viewer sees pixelation while stream health is good, their playback rendition or connection may be the issue rather than your ingest bitrate.

Keep live bitrate settings separate from upload-video settings
