For YouTube Live, set Streamlabs Desktop’s encoder Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. In Streamlabs, look under Settings → Output; the exact placement can vary with output mode and encoder.
What keyframe interval should you use for YouTube Live?
Use 2 seconds. YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and sets four seconds as the maximum; two seconds is the recommended target, not just one of several equal choices. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
A keyframe is a complete video frame used as a reference for subsequent frames. The interval is the time between those keyframes. At 30 frames per second, a two-second interval means one keyframe every 60 frames. It is separate from bitrate, resolution, and frame rate.
Where is Keyframe Interval in Streamlabs Desktop?
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and select Settings → Output.
- Find the streaming encoder controls for the active output mode and encoder.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds, if the control is available in that configuration.
- Apply or save the setting, then validate the stream in YouTube before relying on it for a live broadcast.
Streamlabs identifies Output as the area for encoder configuration and shows two-second encoder-setting examples in its Streamlabs Desktop getting-started guide. The guide does not establish one exact subpanel path for every encoder and output mode, so the displayed controls may differ by configuration.

What does “incorrect video keyframe frequency” mean?
It means YouTube is receiving keyframes at an interval that does not meet its guidance. Check that the active streaming encoder—not merely a saved or inactive profile—is sending keyframes every two seconds. YouTube warns that a frequency longer than four seconds can cause buffering and says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Its live-stream error guidance specifically instructs creators to change the setting so keyframes are sent every two seconds.
Check the GOP setting too
GOP configuration is related to how frames are grouped; it is not another name for bitrate or resolution. If YouTube continues reporting a frequency error after setting two seconds, verify the encoder’s GOP/keyframe behavior and closed-GOP configuration where your encoder exposes it. A saved value alone does not prove that the stream YouTube receives matches it.

Validate the setting before going live
- Run a test stream using the same encoder, output mode, frame rate, and representative motion and audio as the planned broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback while the test is running; confirm there is no keyframe-frequency warning.
- If the warning persists, check that the correct encoder/profile is active and that its emitted interval is two seconds, then verify GOP configuration.
YouTube’s encoder specification cited here applies to RTMP/RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a keyframe frequency recommended at two seconds and not exceeding four.
