Reconnects often indicate an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain, but the symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Start by matching the failure across three places
Write down the disconnect time and your timezone. Then compare that moment in the OBS session log, Ubuntu’s system messages, and the stream health display in YouTube Live Control Room. A link reset in Ubuntu at the same time as OBS send errors is useful evidence, but timing alone does not prove which component caused the failure.
Find the OBS log
In OBS, select Help → Log Files and open the current or previous log for the affected session, when available. On many Linux installations, logs are stored in ~/.config/obs-studio/logs. That path is not guaranteed: Flatpak, Snap, and other builds may store data elsewhere, so use the in-app menu if the directory is missing. Redact stream keys and other credentials before sharing a log.
In the log, inspect timestamps around “Disconnected,” “Reconnecting,” RTMP send errors, timeouts, dropped-frame counters, and output stopping. A connection that starts successfully and later reports send errors points toward an interruption after setup; an immediate SSL or connection error makes the endpoint, protocol, port, or TLS support worth checking first. Treat these as leads, not definitive diagnoses: read the surrounding log and compare it with YouTube’s health messages.

Query Ubuntu’s journal
For a recent window, open Terminal and run:
journalctl --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager
journalctl -k --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pagerThe first command displays journal entries available to your user; the second narrows the query to kernel messages. To inspect a known failure, replace the relative time with a precise --since value and, if useful, add --until. Compare timestamps for network-interface link down/up events, driver resets, firmware errors, suspend/resume events, or system overload indications with OBS’s log. Ubuntu’s Jammy journalctl manual documents journal queries and filtering; logging behavior can differ by Ubuntu release and configuration.
Check traditional log files if present
Ubuntu commonly uses /var/log/syslog for general system messages and /var/log/kern.log for kernel messages, though files and contents vary by setup. Inspect the relevant time window with a pager such as less or search it with grep. A missing or empty file does not show that nothing happened; use the journal as well. Use the evidence to choose the next check

OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, says: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” That points to the connection path; it does not prove OBS itself is defective or identify which part of the path failed.

Test upload stability and local network conditions
Try wired Ethernet and sustainable bitrate
If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix: it will not correct an incorrect RTMPS URL, a YouTube encoder-health error, a congested ISP route, or a faulty router or network interface.
Set the encoder bitrate for stable upload capacity, not just the best result from a speed test. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a general starting rule of thumb; it is not a YouTube guarantee. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload speed and choosing quality the connection can reliably sustain. If you lower the bitrate, change that one setting and watch both OBS dropped frames and YouTube health before making another adjustment. A dynamic-bitrate option, if available in your setup, can trade image quality for fewer drops; it does not repair the underlying connection.
For quality-specific guidance, use YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The page recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live; settings should follow the actual stream format and YouTube’s health feedback rather than a guessed universal bitrate.

Isolate VPN, firewall, and route issues carefully
OBS lists VPN and security software among possible sources of interference. If safe for your setup, briefly test without the VPN or isolate the firewall/security software, then restore protection. Do not leave security controls disabled as a fix. Add a narrow application exception only if a controlled test supports it. If OBS offers another ingest server, test it as a separate variable. A modem/router reboot may help when other devices show connectivity trouble; if local checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP with timestamps and the evidence you collected.
Do not copy Windows-only OBS networking instructions as Ubuntu steps. OBS’s connection guide identifies network optimization and TCP pacing options as Windows-specific; availability of bind and IP-family controls can vary by Linux build.
Check YouTube health, RTMPS, and the stream key
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and review the health messages for the same failure window. YouTube’s health catalog covers problems such as insufficient incoming video, low or high bitrate, unsupported codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and backup-stream configuration. Follow the specific message shown rather than changing multiple encoder settings together. YouTube’s error guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for standard live ingestion and warns about mismatches between primary and backup streams.

When the log points to SSL or a timeout
In Live Control Room, copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key into the encoder rather than relying on an old saved endpoint. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube Help says to use the RTMPS URL; for SSL errors, its guidance says port 443 may need to be explicit. The YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide specifies port 443 and TLS and explains that the server hostname is needed for SNI authentication. Use the full hostname supplied by YouTube. If the encoder instead reports an error when starting, check that the key is current; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying a current stream key.
A stream-key problem and a connection that drops after streaming begins are not interchangeable diagnoses. Use the actual OBS error and YouTube health message to decide which path to investigate.
