These checks help narrow down whether the problem follows the device, Wi-Fi, or the connection, but they do not prove that ACT has a routing fault. No ACT-specific route problem or outage is established here.
Start by finding out where the buffering follows
Change one thing at a time and compare the same live stream. Keep the device, stream, playback quality, and time window the same where possible, and note what changes. A comparison narrows the possibilities; it is not a formal route test.
- Another device on ACT: If the stream works on another supported device on your home network, the affected device or its app becomes a possibility.
- Another internet connection: Try the affected device on a different connection, such as mobile data. Check your mobile data plan before streaming. If playback improves, that points to a difference in the connection path or home network, but does not identify the precise cause.
- Another service: Note whether other devices and services also have problems. This observation can help when you contact ACT, but a working service does not rule out every connection issue.
YouTube Help recommends comparing another internet connection and trying another supported device when troubleshooting playback: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.
Check the device and YouTube app
- Lower the playback quality temporarily. Open the YouTube player’s quality control and choose a lower setting. If that reduces buffering, the result suggests the current playback conditions may not sustain the selected quality; it does not diagnose the route.
- Close and reopen YouTube. If the issue persists, restart the device and check for available app and system updates.
- If watching on a TV, test close to the set. YouTube recommends checking the connection next to the TV and manually adjusting quality. If your TV or streaming device supports another connection, compare it as well.
- Clear cache only if the device offers that option. Follow the device maker’s instructions; menus and controls vary by device.
YouTube Help says network congestion and other factors may also affect live playback: “Network congestion and other factors may also cause live programming issues, which can delay the stream.” A speed result alone therefore cannot identify why a particular live stream buffers.

Separate a weak Wi-Fi signal from a wider connection issue
Compare your usual viewing spot with the router
Play the same stream on the same device first at its usual location, then closer to the router. If playback improves near the router, the wireless link or conditions at the usual location may be contributing. ACT identifies distance, router placement, obstructions, and interference as factors that can affect Wi-Fi. See ACT’s Wi-Fi stability guidance.
Reduce competing traffic briefly
Pause large downloads and other heavy household internet use, and temporarily reduce the number of devices actively using the connection. Compare playback with your normal household use. ACT identifies connected-device demand and simultaneous high-bandwidth use as possible contributors to buffering: ACT’s buffering guidance.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Interpret speed readings cautiously
YouTube Help gives 7 Mbps as the minimum recommended connection speed for HD streaming when checking a TV connection. That is not a guarantee for every live broadcast, device, or network condition, and it does not measure or diagnose route quality. Live playback can still be affected by congestion and other factors. Use a speed result as one observation alongside the device, location, quality, and wired-versus-wireless comparisons—not as proof of an ACT routing problem.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the affected device has an Ethernet port and you have a suitable cable, connect it directly to the router. Compare the same stream, device, playback quality, and time window you used for the Wi-Fi test. ACT identifies Cat 5e or Cat 6 as wired connection options and describes wired performance as consistent; a wired comparison can help isolate the Wi-Fi segment, but cannot by itself prove or repair an ISP route issue. See ACT’s Wi-Fi guidance.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Ethernet is stable, Wi-Fi buffers: This points toward the wireless segment, placement, or competing wireless demand as possibilities.
- Both Ethernet and Wi-Fi buffer: The comparison has not isolated the cause. Continue recording device, stream, time, and connection observations before escalating.
A new cable is not required if you already have a suitable one. Cat 5e or Cat 6 is an optional diagnostic purchase only when you lack a suitable cable and the device supports Ethernet; it is not a guaranteed fix.
Review router settings without making risky changes
- Record existing settings before changing anything. Note relevant configuration so you can restore it if needed.
- Check firmware using the router maker’s instructions. ACT identifies firmware as an area to consider, but exact update steps depend on the router model.
- Treat DNS changes as unproven for this symptom. ACT mentions DNS as a possible troubleshooting area, but the available guidance does not establish that changing DNS fixes YouTube live buffering on ACT.
- Do not begin by disabling IPv6, replacing the router, or buying a VPN or DNS service. No official ACT-specific diagnosis establishes those as fixes for this case. Changing network settings without evidence can introduce new problems.
When and how to contact ACT
If the issue persists after the comparisons, raise a connectivity support ticket through the ACT website or app. ACT’s home Wi-Fi setup guide directs customers to its support flow for persistent connectivity trouble.

Include observations that let support understand what you tested:
- Your city or locality, and the date and time buffering occurred.
- The affected device, YouTube app or playback method, and the live stream involved.
- Whether other devices or services were affected.
- Whether playback changed near the router, at a lower quality, or with competing household traffic paused.
- Whether the same device and stream behaved differently on another connection or over Ethernet.
These details help describe the symptom; they do not establish a route fault. The evidence here does not confirm a current ACT outage or a YouTube-specific ACT routing problem.
