Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If your 30 fps source is going live at 60 fps, set the encoder’s output frame rate to 30 fps unless you deliberately intend to convert the footage. A 60 fps setting cannot create real motion detail that the source never captured, and YouTube’s 60 fps maximum is not a recommendation to force every stream to that rate. Check the source and encoder output separately, then test the result in YouTube Live Control Room.
Why is my 30 fps video streaming at 60 fps?
The camera or media source and the encoder’s output are separate parts of the signal path. A source may deliver 30 frames per second while the encoder is configured to send an output stream at 60 fps. Depending on the encoder, the mismatch may be handled in different ways; YouTube’s general live-stream documentation does not specify whether third-party encoders duplicate, interpolate, drop, or retime frames in this situation.
YouTube supports live input frame rates up to 60 fps and normally detects the resolution and frame rate selected by the encoder. That is a supported maximum, not a direction to set every encoder to 60 fps. If your source supplies 30 fps and you do not intend frame-rate conversion, set the encoder output to 30 fps.
How to fix the 30-to-60 fps mismatch
- Confirm the source rate. Check the camera, capture source, or media file and verify that it actually supplies 30 fps. Do not assume the encoder’s output setting describes the source.
- Check the encoder output separately. Find the encoder’s video or output frame-rate setting. If the source is 30 fps and you have no intentional conversion workflow, choose 30 fps. Menu names and conversion behavior vary by encoder software; YouTube does not document controls for third-party encoders.
- Review YouTube’s stream configuration. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate from the encoder. If you need to set a resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room.
- Run a realistic test before the event. Test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and messages, then monitor stream health once live.
- Verify what the encoder is actually sending. If the mismatch persists, consult that encoder’s documentation or output diagnostics. YouTube’s general guidance does not establish how a particular application converts mismatched source and output rates.
When should you use 30 fps or 60 fps?
For a fixed 30 fps source with no deliberate conversion, matching the output to 30 fps is the straightforward choice. If the source can genuinely supply either rate, decide based on the distinct frames it captures, the motion smoothness your production needs, the encoder computer’s capacity, and the sustained upload bitrate available. YouTube’s guidance specifies ingestion recommendations by rate and resolution, but it does not prescribe a universal perceptual preference between 30 and 60 fps.

Choose an appropriate bitrate and keyframe interval
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended 1080p bitrates are:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For comparison, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60 H.264. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection will sustain the stream. Test upload capacity and select a quality your connection can maintain reliably. Match the recommendation to your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating bitrate or connection trouble as a frame-rate problem.

Troubleshoot a stream that still looks or sounds poor
- The encoder preview is already poor: Check that the intended video and audio sources are routed correctly. Review encoder errors and CPU load, and inspect a local recording if available.
- The encoder output looks healthy but the live stream degrades: Test outbound internet speed and investigate connection stability. Confirm your upload can sustain the selected bitrate.
- The frame rate still appears wrong: Recheck the source rate and output setting independently, then inspect the encoder’s actual output or documentation for its conversion behavior.
- YouTube reports stream issues: Review Live Control Room messages and stream health, and test again before the event with representative movement and audio.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than stream a live camera or production, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
