To set a “cue point” on YouTube Live, use YouTube’s mid-roll ad controls in Live Control Room. You can let YouTube place breaks automatically, schedule them at set intervals, or insert them manually; a Stream Deck is optional. A cue or ad slot does not guarantee that an ad will actually play.
What “cue points” mean on YouTube Live
“Cue point” is informal shorthand for choosing when a live-stream ad break can happen. YouTube calls the feature mid-roll ads. The controls are part of Live Control Room; you do not need to buy a hardware controller to insert a break.
Choose how mid-roll ads are placed
Automatic placement
With monetization enabled, YouTube can place mid-rolls automatically. YouTube recommends this option; it says earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual placement. That is YouTube’s platform guidance, not a guarantee of any particular revenue.
Scheduled breaks
Choose a recurring interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes in Live Control Room. This gives you a predictable schedule for possible ad breaks, but it does not guarantee that an ad will fill each slot.

Manual insertion
Use the mid-roll control in Live Control Room when you decide a break is appropriate. If you choose manual mode and do not insert a mid-roll, YouTube says no mid-roll will be served. You can also use YouTube’s documented Elgato Stream Deck plugin to trigger ad insertion from a physical control. The Stream Deck is optional: manual insertion is available in Live Control Room without it. Check current plugin and device compatibility before buying a particular model.
What happens when a slot is not filled
YouTube’s ad systems decide whether to fill an available slot using several factors. If an ad does not run, viewers continue watching the live stream. Treat scheduled times and manual insertions as opportunities for an ad, not guaranteed interruptions or revenue.

Set up an encoder-based YouTube Live stream
You can insert ads using Live Control Room whether or not you use an encoder. An encoder is useful for productions involving gameplay, screen sharing, external audio or video equipment, or other advanced setups. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events.
- Enable live streaming. Verify the channel and enable live streaming. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general requirements include channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream in the Stream tab, or schedule one in Manage. Scheduling lets you promote the event and viewers set reminders. Follow YouTube’s encoder-stream setup guidance.
- Enter the stream URL and key in your encoder. Copy both from YouTube into the encoder’s server and stream-key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, check picture and sound, then select Go live. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Verify the public event. Confirm that it appears on your channel and watch pages, and check it on mobile. Monitor audio and video during the broadcast. When finished, stop the stream in YouTube and in the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Protect an important moment from automatic breaks
If you use automatic mid-rolls, Delay ads in Live Control Room delays automatic breaks for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before they resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is enabled, so this control does not block a manual insertion.

Other ways to earn from a live stream
Depending on channel and feature eligibility, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers in Live Chat, and channel memberships as live-stream revenue paths. Eligibility varies by feature, so check the requirements shown for your channel in YouTube Studio. YouTube says revenue from live broadcasts and replays can be reviewed in YouTube Analytics with the Live filter. Its monetization guidance also says ads are turned off in an embedded live player with autoplay.

Troubleshoot common cue-point and stream problems
- No mid-roll played at the time you expected: An ad slot is not guaranteed to fill. Check whether you selected automatic, scheduled, or manual placement; in manual mode, confirm that you actually inserted a break.
- An automatic ad interrupts a key segment: Use Delay ads before the segment to delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. Remember that a manually placed mid-roll still displays during the delay.
- The encoder does not connect: Check that its server field contains YouTube’s stream URL and that its key matches the current key. If you reset the key, replace the old one in the encoder.
- The stream is not available to start: Confirm that live streaming is enabled and the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Viewers see a slate but still hear you: An away overlay does not mute the microphone or other audio sources. Mute the relevant source in the encoder or audio setup.
- The scheduled event is not ready at start time: Set up the encoder at least two hours ahead and start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, as YouTube recommends; use the preview to verify the incoming picture and sound before going live.
