If YouTube detects third-party content in your live stream, it may replace your stream with a placeholder image and warn you to stop streaming that content. If it remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A match does not automatically mean you received a copyright strike, and a Content ID claim on an archived stream is a separate, post-stream event.
What happens when YouTube detects a copyright match during a live stream?
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. When it identifies such content, it may show a placeholder image instead of your stream and warn you to stop streaming the material. If you address the issue, the stream can continue; if the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes this as a possible sequence, not an assurance that every match leads to an immediate shutdown.
- Scanning: YouTube checks live streams for third-party content.
- Warning and placeholder: If it identifies content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn you.
- Response: Stop or remove the matched content when warned. YouTube says the stream can continue if you address the issue.
- Possible interruption or termination: If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream.
YouTube also says a stream can be terminated if the creator receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. That is distinct from saying every automated match creates a strike.
Is a live-stream interruption the same as a Content ID claim or strike?
No. A warning or interruption during a live broadcast, a Content ID claim on an archived video, and a copyright strike are different events. YouTube says it makes Content ID claims on a livestream only after the stream ends, if the creator chooses to archive it. A live match by itself does not establish that a strike was issued. YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends checking Studio if a stream stops.

- Live warning or interruption: YouTube may respond while the broadcast is happening if it identifies third-party content.
- Archived-stream Content ID claim: This may happen after the stream ends if you archive it.
- Copyright strike: This is a separate enforcement matter. Check the notice in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a live match created one.
What if you have a license for the content?
A license does not necessarily prevent YouTube’s live matching response. YouTube says creators who have licensed third-party content should ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without allowlisting, a stream may still be interrupted, including when the creator relies on territory restrictions. See YouTube’s guidance for licensed content and allowlisting.
Ask the rights owner or its representative to confirm that the correct channel is allowlisted before the broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms also say content providers represent that they have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. That platform-term statement does not determine the scope of an individual license or provide legal advice. YouTube’s terms

What to do if your stream stops
- Open YouTube Studio and check the dashboard. Look for the specific notice or any listed copyright or Community Guidelines strike; YouTube recommends checking there when a live stream stops. Live-stream copyright guidance
- Follow the notice. Stop or remove the content identified in a live warning. If you had permission to use it, contact the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- Check livestream access and listed issues. YouTube says access can be restored after listed issues are fixed, but its cited guidance does not give one universal restoration timeline.
YouTube says a copyright or Community Guidelines strike on an active or archived livestream may disable livestream access; three strikes make a channel subject to termination. A particular live interruption does not, on its own, prove that a strike was issued. YouTube’s copyright strike guidance
Live Content ID matching is a partner tool, not a creator setting
YouTube has a separate live Content ID matching feature for certain rights-management partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager. It helps eligible rights holders identify copies of their live streams in real time. It is not the general scanning process that applies to ordinary creators’ streams. For this partner feature, YouTube describes a warning to the streamer using the rights holder’s content; continued matching may replace the stream with a static image without sound, and can lead to termination and loss of access to live features. YouTube says this feature creates no claims on those live copies. Standard Content ID, by contrast, can create claims on matched videos and apply the rights holder’s selected policies.
Who can use live matching?
YouTube describes eligibility requirements that include a proven record operating Content ID, time-sensitive content such as a sports event or music festival, a high probability of users streaming copies, and global rights. A live stream covered by the feature cannot include third-party material such as static images, commercials, or background music. YouTube’s eligibility information

Do not confuse Copyright Match Tool with a live-stream warning
YouTube’s Copyright Match Tool helps rightsholders find possible copies of their own videos. A result is not by itself a finding of infringement: the rightsholder must review the match and consider exceptions such as fair use or fair dealing. This tool is aimed at rights holders looking for copies, not at creators responding to a live-stream warning. YouTube’s Copyright Match Tool guidance
