OBS showing “Streaming” only confirms that OBS is trying to send video; it does not confirm YouTube is receiving the feed for the event you intend. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the correct event and check its stream health and preview. If there is no preview, troubleshoot the stream URL, key, protocol, encoder connection, and network. If a preview is visible but the event is not live, follow YouTube’s workflow and click Go live when prompted.
First, identify which stage is offline
OBS’s local status and YouTube’s event status describe different stages. OBS can report that it is streaming while YouTube has no feed for the selected event—or has a preview but has not started the public event. Use the Live Control Room preview and health messages to choose the right branch, rather than changing settings at random. YouTube says you can check stream health and analytics in Live Control Room (YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics).
- No preview: YouTube is not showing a received feed for that event. Check the event, destination URL, stream key, protocol, encoder connection, and network.
- Preview present, event offline: the feed has reached YouTube, but the event may still need to be started in Live Control Room.
- OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects: investigate the connection to YouTube or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- A specific health or format error appears: address that message first; avoid changing unrelated encoder settings.
Fix the event and ingest path if there is no preview
1. Confirm the intended event in Live Control Room
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and verify that the selected stream is the event OBS should be feeding. If you reuse stream settings, OBS may still be configured with a previous stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup workflow uses the URL and key supplied for the intended stream (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
2. Copy the current stream URL and key into OBS
Compare OBS’s destination with the stream settings for the selected event. If you use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL from YouTube’s stream settings using the lock icon; do not assume an older server address or key is still correct. A connection timeout can occur if the URL is wrong or the encoder does not support RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers the URL, key, timeout, and SSL troubleshooting (Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If encoder startup fails, YouTube recommends getting a new stream key and updating the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. After updating it in OBS, start streaming again and check whether the preview appears.
3. Follow the exact error shown in stream health
Read the Live Control Room health indicator and any accompanying error. YouTube’s live-stream error guide lists messages and their relevant remedies (Live streaming error messages). For an incorrect-format error, YouTube’s guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Don’t treat that correction as a universal fix if the dashboard reports a different problem.

4. Check OBS output and connection
OBS Project defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Too many dropped frames can disconnect OBS; they do not by themselves prove OBS is defective (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting, published September 30, 2024).
- Prefer wired Ethernet while diagnosing Wi-Fi instability. Replace a cable only if it is damaged or otherwise suspected of being faulty.
- In OBS, check that Bind to IP is set to Default.
- Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, firewall or security software, network-optimization software, driver, router, modem, or cable is interrupting delivery. Change one relevant factor at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Test whether the internet connection can sustain the stream’s total outbound bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate (Streaming tips).
- OBS’s connection guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when lowering video bitrate. This is an OBS troubleshooting heuristic, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stable streaming.
Dynamic bitrate in OBS may reduce frame drops during congestion, but it can lower picture quality and does not repair an unstable connection. If tests show the connection itself is faulty, contact your ISP or investigate the network hardware.

Check encoder settings only when the feed or error points to them
Compare OBS’s output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the exact Live Control Room message. YouTube’s settings page lists supported codecs, bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate, and other recommendations; consult its current table for your actual output instead of reusing a generic bitrate (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Protocol: use the stream URL and protocol supported by both YouTube and your encoder. For RTMPS-specific connection trouble, verify the copied RTMPS URL and encoder support.
- Rate control: YouTube’s current guidance specifies CBR.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Codec and format: YouTube’s current encoder table includes H.264, H.265, and AV1. If the specific error says the format is incorrect, its error guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio.
- Bitrate: use the current recommendation for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then ensure your stable upload capacity has the recommended headroom.
These are setup recommendations, not evidence that any one setting caused your offline status. If OBS is connected and YouTube shows a preview, changing codecs or bitrate is unlikely to address an event that simply has not been started.

If YouTube shows a preview, start the event
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview, then click Go live when the workflow prompts you. A preview means YouTube is receiving the feed; it is not the same as the public event being live. After starting it, check the channel or watch page to confirm the event is available (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
When OBS looks healthy but viewers still report a problem
Distinguish a viewer’s playback issue from an upstream ingest failure. If Live Control Room has a healthy preview and the event is live, but one viewer cannot watch, investigate that viewer’s playback or network separately. If the feed is absent from the dashboard, continue diagnosing the encoder-to-YouTube path instead. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers encoder checks, refreshing a key, CPU load, and outbound connection problems (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
