There is no single setting that fixes every “encoder settings are incompatible” warning. Read the full Live Control Room message, confirm whether your stream uses RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, then compare the encoder’s video and audio formats, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe settings with YouTube’s requirements for that setup.
Use the diagnostic steps below in order. YouTube documents several specific format and bitrate errors, but the warning wording alone does not identify one universal cause. YouTube’s live streaming error guide and the encoder settings guide are the references for matching the fix to the actual message.
1. Read the full warning and identify the stream protocol
Open the stream’s Live Control Room and expand or read the complete error message rather than relying on the short “incompatible” summary. Note any specific terms such as stream format, codec, bitrate, or resolution; the detailed message determines which check to make first.
Next, establish whether the encoder is sending RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. YouTube publishes separate guidance for these protocols. The general encoder settings below apply to RTMP/RTMPS; do not apply them as a substitute for HLS requirements. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its general encoder guidance.

- RTMP/RTMPS: Check the encoder against YouTube’s general format, bitrate, and encoding recommendations.
- HLS: Check the HLS stream key, HTTPS ingestion URL, segment format, and playlist behavior described in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
2. Match the video and audio formats to the specific error
If Live Control Room reports “Incorrect stream format,” YouTube’s error guidance says to use H.264 video and AAC audio. It also identifies an unsupported container, audio codec, video codec, or video codec profile as possible format problems. Check the encoder’s actual output—not just the source file—and change the setting named by the error.
This specific remedy is not the same as the broader list of codecs YouTube supports in its general RTMP/RTMPS guidance. That page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. A codec appearing in the general list does not override a more specific error message or establish that every protocol, profile, or workflow accepts it. Confirm the protocol and follow the applicable instruction in the error guide and settings guide.
- Confirm the selected video codec and profile.
- Confirm the audio codec. For an “Incorrect stream format” error, use AAC audio as directed by YouTube.
- Check that the outgoing container and stream format are supported for the protocol you selected.
3. Check bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together
Bitrate recommendations depend on video codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate; a value that fits one combination may not fit another. YouTube’s figures below are recommended bitrates, not universal mandatory targets.

| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are selected entries from YouTube’s broader table. Look up the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate in the current official bitrate table; do not infer a value for an unlisted combination from these examples.

Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the stream’s ingestion settings in Live Control Room. YouTube notes that if the entrypoint does not use a variable-resolution setting, bitrate must match the exact rate selected on the Ingestion Settings page. If your available upload bandwidth cannot sustain the selected resolution, YouTube advises lowering the resolution. Then choose the bitrate recommendation for that new resolution, codec, and frame rate.
4. Verify keyframes and encoding mode
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It also specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Check the encoder’s output settings for both; a keyframe interval that is too long or a variable bitrate mode can contribute to an incompatible or unhealthy stream.

YouTube’s general guidance also lists these advanced recommendations: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, 8-bit SDR, and 10-bit HDR. These are part of its general RTMP/RTMPS recommendations; HDR has separate requirements covered below.
5. Check audio settings if the message or stream points to audio
YouTube’s general encoder settings list the following audio guidance:
- Stereo: 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps.
- 5.1 surround: 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC audio.
If the error specifically identifies the audio format, prioritize the error remedy over general settings. For example, YouTube’s “Incorrect stream format” guidance calls for AAC audio.

6. Diagnose HLS as an HLS workflow
HLS requires its own stream key and the HTTPS ingestion URL shown in Live Control Room. It also has delivery requirements that do not apply as a simple RTMP setting change:
- Use TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Send segments with HTTPS POST/PUT.
- Do not use byte range or encryption other than HTTPS.
YouTube says ultra-low latency is off for HLS and that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments. Review the full HLS setup instructions and verify the selected protocol, stream key, and URL together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Treat HDR as a separate configuration
HDR adds requirements beyond ordinary SDR settings. YouTube documents HEVC and 10-bit video with compatible color characteristics. Its HDR streaming instructions include encoder-specific setup; for OBS, they specify a minimum OBS version of 30.1. HDR/HLS instructions also require selecting HLS for that workflow while leaving manual resolution off. Follow the instructions for your encoder and protocol rather than applying SDR settings to an HDR stream.

8. Test the revised settings before going live
After changing settings, run a preflight test with representative audio and movement. This can reveal problems that a static image or silent test will miss. During the test and event, monitor Live Control Room’s stream health and messages; if a new warning appears, use its exact details to select the next diagnostic check. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder settings guidance.
Common causes and fixes
| What you see or find | What to check or change |
|---|---|
| “Incorrect stream format” | Use H.264 video and AAC audio as YouTube’s specific error guidance directs; also check container, codec, and video profile. |
| Bitrate warning or mismatch | Match bitrate to codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. If the entrypoint is not variable-resolution, match the exact rate selected in Ingestion Settings. |
| Stream cannot sustain the selected resolution | Lower the resolution to a level your available upload bandwidth can support, then recheck the bitrate recommendation for that combination. |
| Keyframe or encoding-mode concern | For RTMP/RTMPS, set a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds) and CBR. |
| HLS connection or delivery issue | Verify that you selected HLS, created an HLS stream key, used the HTTPS URL from Live Control Room, and meet the segment and rolling-playlist requirements. |
| HDR stream is rejected or unhealthy | Check HEVC, 10-bit video, compatible color characteristics, and the encoder-specific HDR instructions for the selected protocol. |
