One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThere is no bitrate that guarantees a stable 24/7 YouTube stream on every Indian connection. Match bitrate to your resolution, frame rate and codec, then verify sustained upload capacity on the connection you will actually use. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. For H.264, a practical starting point is 720p30 at 4 Mbps; for 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate.
Choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance, not its separate table for uploading prerecorded videos. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 video bitrate settings in Mbps; the recommended value is a target, not a promise that your connection can sustain it.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | Requires substantially more upload capacity than 1080p30. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Five Mbps is the listed minimum, not YouTube’s recommended target. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Higher motion smoothness than 720p30, with the same recommended bitrate in this table. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | A 4 Mbps starting point is a conservative practical choice, not the platform minimum. |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | A lower-resolution fallback when the uplink cannot reliably support HD. |
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | A further fallback where connection capacity is constrained. |
YouTube also lists recommended AV1 or H.265/HEVC bitrates of 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60. Encoder support matters: choose one of YouTube’s supported codecs only if your encoder can produce it reliably. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the complete table and any settings that have changed.
How much upload speed do you need for YouTube Live?
Plan around the stream’s outbound bitrate, not the download speed advertised for your broadband plan. YouTube notes that upload can be slower than download, that other users on the same network reduce available capacity, and that network disruptions can interrupt an encoder.

As a practical calculation, allow about 20% headroom above the total bitrate being sent. A 4 Mbps video stream therefore needs roughly 4.8 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity before accounting for other traffic. Include audio and any simultaneous backup stream in your total. If your connection cannot sustain the resulting target, lower the bitrate or resolution rather than running at a setting that repeatedly drops frames. YouTube’s guidance is at its live encoder settings page and network bandwidth recommendations.
Measure the connection you will actually stream through
- Connect the encoder to the intended wired or Wi-Fi network and pause avoidable uploads, downloads and backups.
- Measure outbound upload performance at representative busy times, not only when the network is quiet. A single peak result does not show what a connection can sustain around the clock.
- Run a test stream using audio and moving video similar to the planned broadcast. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health while the connection is under realistic household or workplace use.
- If upload varies or stream health worsens, reduce bitrate or resolution and repeat the test. Do not treat a nominal ISP plan speed as proof of 24/7 stability.
YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a nationwide Indian upload-speed baseline, rank Indian providers, or validate any particular plan. Actual performance depends on the location and connection being tested.

Set the encoder and Live Control Room correctly
YouTube’s general live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; up to 60 frames per second; constant bitrate (CBR); keyframes every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted ingestion option. It transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Use the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream’s setup details in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, public documents or shared configuration.
- In the encoder, set the chosen resolution, frame rate, video codec, CBR bitrate, two-second keyframe interval, and supported audio format. The encoder—not the Control Room—must be configured to send the selected output.
- YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the default. If you need a manual stream resolution, configure a custom stream key in Live Control Room, then set matching resolution and frame rate in the encoder.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators before sharing or relying on the broadcast.
For the current interface and setup details, see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and its encoder settings guidance.

Plan for a 24/7 stream’s archive and recovery limits
Do not rely on YouTube to capture a stream longer than 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full broadcast matters, record a local archive as a separate backup. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Set realistic rewind expectations
DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek back to before the live stream began. A continuous stream is therefore not equivalent to an on-demand recording with a complete archive. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Test failover and local recording
If you use a primary and backup encoder, YouTube recommends testing failover—for example, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player switches to the backup. Monitor whether local recording files continue to grow. An Ethernet connection can avoid some local Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot create upload capacity your internet connection does not have. YouTube’s guidance is in its encoder recommendations, encoder setup instructions and live streaming tips.
Troubleshoot unstable or failed streams
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or poor stream health | The available upload capacity is below the stream’s total bitrate, fluctuates, or is shared with other network users. | Check actual sustained upload; reduce bitrate or resolution; pause competing transfers and retest at busy times. |
| Stream will not connect | The encoder may have an incorrect stream URL or key, or settings that do not match the selected stream setup. | Copy the current URL and key from YouTube’s stream setup. Recheck the encoder output settings and preview the incoming signal in Live Control Room. |
| Video appears inconsistent with the intended output | YouTube is using automatic resolution and frame-rate detection, or a custom stream key and encoder settings do not match. | Check the selected stream key and its resolution configuration, then ensure the encoder sends the matching resolution and frame rate. |
| Viewers cannot rewind far enough or the full stream is missing afterward | DVR can be limited beyond 12 hours, and a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. | Set viewer expectations about rewind and maintain a local recording if the complete stream is important. |
| Backup does not take over during an outage | Failover has not been verified, or the backup encoder is not ready to serve the stream. | Run a controlled failover test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, and confirm the player moves to the backup. |
