Start by checking whether YouTube created an archive of the stream. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; because chat replay is available with stream archives, no archive is the first likely reason there is no replay. If an archive exists, check its replay setting, audience designation, editing history, policy notices, and where you are viewing it.
1. Check whether YouTube saved an archive
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, then the Live tab.
- Find the ended broadcast and confirm that it has a video archive.
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” This is conditional, not a rule that every 24/7 stream will lack an archive. Check the individual broadcast in Studio. YouTube’s cited help page does not state a publication year. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
If no archive exists, there is no archived video on which to play chat replay. A local recording can preserve the video as a backup, but it cannot restore chat replay to a YouTube archive that was never created.
2. Turn on replay for an existing archive
YouTube says Live chat replay is on by default for live streams and is available alongside stream archives. It can be deselected in the archived video’s settings.

- In YouTube Studio, open Content (or go to youtube.com/my_videos) and select Live.
- Select the archived video.
- Open its Customization tab and check that Live chat replay is selected.
If the setting was off, enable it and then check the archive’s watch page. YouTube Help: Learn about live chat.
3. Check the audience designation
If the stream is designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables Live chat and Live chat replay. Check the video’s audience designation in Studio. If the designation is correct, this is an availability restriction rather than a replay toggle to restore. YouTube Help: Set your channel or video’s audience.

4. Check whether you edited the archive
YouTube says streams edited in the Studio video editor will not have chat replay, regardless of which editing function was used. If the archived stream was edited there, changing the replay toggle will not bring replay back. YouTube Help: Edit video settings.
5. Review policy notices or restrictions
YouTube may turn off Live chat on a video if its content or chat violates Community Guidelines. Review notices and restrictions shown in Studio. The cited guidance does not promise a creator-side override for chat that YouTube has disabled. YouTube Help: Manage live chat.

6. Test replay on the right page and in the right view
- Open the archived video on its YouTube watch page. Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players.
- In the chat panel, choose Live chat, not Top chat. Top chat filters messages; Live chat is the unfiltered view.
If messages appear in Live chat on the watch page but not in an embed or Top chat, replay is present; the viewing context or filter explains what you saw. YouTube Help: Learn about live chat.
