For a YouTube podcast livestream with a still image, a practical starting point is 720p at 30 fps, H.264, 8 Mbps video, CBR, AAC stereo at 128 kbps, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. This is a sensible starting configuration—not a special YouTube preset for still images. YouTube’s guidance does not specify a lower bitrate just because the picture is static.

Recommended settings for a still-image podcast stream

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Ingestion resolution and frame rate 1280 × 720 at 30 fps (720p30) A practical balance for an audio-led stream. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation is tied to codec, resolution, and frame rate—not whether the image moves.
Video codec H.264 The bitrate figures below apply specifically to H.264. If your encoder uses AV1 or H.265, use the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder settings table.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 720p30.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for a live stream.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; its advanced guidance recommends 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo.
Ingestion protocol RTMPS where supported YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission to its servers.

These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations for the specified format, not a guarantee of picture or sound quality. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full current table.

Does a still image need a lower bitrate?

Not according to the YouTube guidance cited here: it does not publish a separate bitrate preset for a static image. Use the recommendation for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate you send to YouTube. A still visual may be less demanding than fast-moving footage in some encoding situations, but that is not a reason to present a lower value as YouTube’s official recommendation.

For an H.264 stream, YouTube’s listed recommendations for common 30 fps formats are:

Ingestion format Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

If your upload connection is stable and has enough spare capacity, 1080p30 is an option; YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at that format. If stability is the priority, start at 720p30 and test the actual stream rather than choosing 1080p solely because the source image is high resolution.

How much upload speed to allow

YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth room above the total stream bitrate and accounting for a backup stream if you use one. At the 720p30 starting setting, the arithmetic is: 8 Mbps video + 0.128 Mbps audio = 8.128 Mbps total; adding 20% gives about 9.8 Mbps. That is an estimate calculated from YouTube’s guidance, not a separate YouTube-published speed target. Use a speed test on the connection you plan to stream from, and allow for other devices and network traffic.

More upload bandwidth does not mean you should raise the encoder bitrate without limit. Choose a setting the connection can sustain consistently. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple playback formats, so the ingestion bitrate you select is not necessarily the bitrate each viewer receives.

Set up and test the stream

  1. Choose the encoder format. In your streaming software, select H.264, 1280 × 720 at 30 fps, CBR, and 8 Mbps video. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
  2. Configure audio. Select AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Check that the podcast audio is routed to the live encoder and is not muted or doubled by a second audio source.
  3. Connect using RTMPS. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use its stream connection details in your encoder. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish or share it. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers managing stream settings.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test first. Include the same audio path and representative movement or transitions you expect during the real event. Confirm that the still image is visible, speech is clear, and the audio remains in sync.
  5. Watch stream health and messages. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. If the connection is unstable, reduce the ingestion resolution or bitrate and test again rather than assuming a static image makes dropped frames harmless. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Choose the right setup for a recurring podcast

A still-image podcast can be sent live from streaming software on a computer, provided the computer and internet connection remain available for the broadcast. For recurring or continuous streams, plan the video file and audio carefully and use material you have the rights to stream; the bitrate setting does not establish permission to broadcast copyrighted content. Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream settings and requirements before a public event.

Common bitrate and stream problems

  • Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health: the connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. Run a speed test, leave the recommended headroom, and lower the resolution or bitrate if needed.
  • Video looks soft despite a still image: confirm the encoder is sending the resolution and codec you intended, and that it is not set below YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that format.
  • Audio is missing or distorted: check the encoder’s selected audio source, confirm AAC stereo output at the configured sample rate, and listen to a test stream before the event.
  • Audio and image drift out of sync: test the complete playback path before going public and check whether the source file or encoder applies extra audio processing or delay.
  • Stream will not connect: verify the active YouTube stream key and RTMPS connection details in the encoder, and confirm the stream is set up in YouTube Studio.
  • Changing codec but keeping the same bitrate: bitrate guidance differs across H.264, AV1, and H.265. Match the YouTube table row to the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually used.
