There is no separate YouTube Live bitrate recommendation for animation or fast motion. Choose a bitrate by your encoder codec, resolution, and frame rate: for H.264, start at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60; for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, start at 10 Mbps or 12 Mbps, respectively. Then test with representative motion and confirm your upload connection can sustain the setting.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrates for animation
YouTube’s live ingestion table sets recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate—not by content type or motion complexity. These are starting settings for the feed sent to YouTube, not a guarantee that every scene will look identical.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps recommended | 21 Mbps recommended |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps recommended | 34 Mbps recommended |
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps recommended | 42 Mbps recommended |
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps recommended | 50 Mbps recommended |
Minimum rates are not the recommended targets for best quality. YouTube’s table lists the minimums for 720p and 1080p; the higher-resolution values shown here are the recommended rates. For exact current guidance, see YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What fast motion changes
Fast movement can make compression artifacts easier to notice, particularly around thin outlines, small moving details, and abrupt scene changes. YouTube does not publish an animation-specific uplift or a percentage to add to its bitrate recommendations. Treat any extra bitrate as a test choice, not official YouTube guidance.

Start with the table’s recommended value for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. If the image looks soft or shows artifacts while the connection and stream are stable, review your encoder settings and test a higher supported bitrate if your upload can sustain it. If the stream becomes unstable, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than forcing a bitrate your connection cannot maintain.
Set up the encoder and test a representative scene
- Choose a supported codec and output mode. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live encoding, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Select the matching codec, resolution, and frame rate before applying the corresponding bitrate from the table.
- Set bitrate mode to CBR. Use constant bitrate for the live contribution feed.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS for RTMP-based delivery. YouTube recommends RTMPS for a more secure connection.
- Test before the stream. Include audio and motion similar to the actual animation: quick pans, fast character movement, fine linework, and scene changes if those appear in the program. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream.
- Check stream health and messages. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and review warnings or encoder messages during the test and event. Confirm that the bitrate remains stable rather than judging only a still frame.
Choose a setting your upload can sustain
The recommended bitrate is the rate your encoder sends to YouTube; it is not a single playback bitrate guaranteed to every viewer. YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats. Your upload connection therefore needs to carry the outgoing stream reliably, and a brief speed-test result alone does not prove that it can sustain a live broadcast.

If you cannot hold the recommended rate steadily, lower the resolution or frame rate to a setting your connection can maintain. YouTube advises choosing quality based on connection reliability and testing upload bitrate. Do not confuse these live-ingestion values with YouTube’s separate bitrate recommendations for uploaded, prerecorded files.
