A 5 Mbps upload connection is below YouTube’s recommended 720p live bitrate for both H.264 and AV1/H.265. For a mostly static devotional stream, test your actual upload and, if you use H.264, try 3 Mbps video bitrate as a cautious starting point. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as its 720p H.264 minimum; increase only if your connection can sustain more with headroom. A connection plan’s advertised speed is not a guarantee of steady upload capacity.

Recommended 720p YouTube Live bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder table lists the same 720p bitrate targets for 30 and 60 frames per second. At either frame rate, its recommended bitrate is 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 (HEVC). The listed minimums are 3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are YouTube-published settings on its live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Codec YouTube 720p minimum YouTube 720p recommended What 5 Mbps means
H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps The connection rating is below the recommended target. Test at 3 Mbps first and raise it only if upload capacity is reliably available.
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 2 Mbps 6 Mbps The connection rating is also below the recommended target. The lower published minimum does not guarantee your connection will sustain a stable stream.

The bitrate figures refer to the video encoder setting, not to the internet plan’s advertised speed. Leave room for audio, network overhead, other devices, and fluctuations in upload capacity. A speed test is a useful check, but a single result cannot guarantee that the connection will remain steady throughout a broadcast.

Choose 720p settings for devotional content

Start with 1280 × 720 at 30 fps

For a mostly static devotional image or a speaker with limited movement, 1280 × 720 at 30 fps is a sensible starting point. This is a practical recommendation based on the content, not a special YouTube rule for devotional videos. YouTube lists the same 720p bitrate guidance for 30 and 60 fps. Choose 60 fps if the scene has movement that benefits from the smoother motion, not simply because it is available.

Set a bitrate your connection can hold

First test the actual upload connection under conditions similar to the broadcast, and check whether other people or devices will share it. With H.264, begin at 3 Mbps if tests show that rate is sustainable. Do not set the video bitrate to 5 Mbps just because the connection is described as “5 Mbps”; that leaves no capacity for variation or the rest of the stream. Increase the bitrate only after testing shows adequate, consistent headroom. If the connection cannot hold even the chosen setting, lower the bitrate or improve the upload connection before relying on the stream.

Use the encoder settings YouTube specifies

  • Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Transport: Use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps for stereo audio.

These settings are from YouTube’s live encoder recommendations. Encoder menus differ, so look for the equivalent labels in your software rather than assuming every application uses identical wording.

Test the stream before the devotional broadcast

  1. Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test from the same internet connection and, if possible, at a time when the stream would normally run. Treat the result as an indication, not a guarantee of sustained performance.
  2. Configure a test stream. Set 1280 × 720 at 30 fps, choose the video bitrate and encoder settings above, and connect using the stream key and RTMPS address provided in YouTube’s live setup. Keep the stream key private.
  3. Use representative content. Test with the same kind of audio and movement planned for the devotional stream. Static imagery and busy motion can place different demands on the encoder.
  4. Check stream health while it runs. Watch YouTube’s live status and your encoder’s connection indicators. If you see dropped frames or unstable delivery, reduce the bitrate or address competing network use before the real broadcast.
  5. Confirm playback on another device. Check that video and audio play as expected and that the stream remains stable beyond a brief preview.

Set latency for the way viewers will watch

If you are not interacting with viewers in real time, minimizing delay may matter less than steady playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can cause more buffering. Choose a less aggressive latency setting when prompt audience interaction is not important, and prioritize a stable connection. See YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings for setup and latency options.

Do not confuse live bitrate with upload-file bitrate

YouTube publishes separate settings for live encoder input and prerecorded video files. Its SDR upload guidance lists 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates (24–30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates (48–60 fps). Those figures are for uploading a video file, not for sending a live stream to YouTube. For a livestream, use the codec-specific live figures above. The separate upload guidance is at YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Troubleshoot an unstable 720p stream

  • The encoder reports dropped frames or connection instability: The upload may not sustain the configured bitrate, or other network activity may be competing for capacity. Test again, reduce the video bitrate, and limit competing uploads or streams.
  • The bitrate is set to the full 5 Mbps connection rating: A rated or measured upload speed is not a safe encoder target by itself. Lower the video bitrate to leave capacity for audio, overhead, and variation; for H.264, 3 Mbps is the listed 720p minimum to test against.
  • You are using the upload-file table to configure a livestream: The 5 Mbps standard-frame-rate figure on YouTube’s upload page applies to prerecorded SDR files. Switch to YouTube’s live encoder table.
  • Playback buffers despite a connected encoder: Lower latency can increase buffering. If the stream does not need live interaction, favor a less aggressive latency setting and check whether the upload remains stable.
  • The stream will not connect: Check that the selected YouTube stream key and RTMPS server details match the current live setup. Do not share the stream key; anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel.
