For a 1440p60 YouTube Live stream, set video bitrate to 34 Mbps with H.264 or 24 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. YouTube’s stated minimums are 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These figures apply to the video sent to YouTube as a live stream, even when the video itself was prerecorded.
Choose the bitrate for the codec you send to YouTube
Use the row matching the encoder’s output codec. YouTube’s current English-language live encoder guidance lists these values for 1440p at 60 frames per second, accessed October 3, 2026.
| Video codec sent to YouTube | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 | 24 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 24 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Source: YouTube Live encoder settings. The recommendation is based on the codec, resolution, and frame rate used for live ingestion—not on whether the source clip was recorded in advance. The minimum is a floor, not the recommended target. YouTube does not establish here that one codec always looks better than another; choose a supported codec your encoder can send reliably.
Configure the encoder for a stable 1440p60 stream
Set constant bitrate and keyframes
- Set rate control to CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Set the output resolution to 2560 × 1440 and frame rate to 60 fps if those are the intended stream settings.
- Set the video bitrate to the recommended value for the outgoing codec in the table above.
Leave upload-bandwidth headroom
YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate and warns that network disruption can break a live stream. For a 34 Mbps video stream, 20% extra is about 6.8 Mbps, making roughly 40.8 Mbps of available upload capacity a practical arithmetic implication before accounting for audio and other network traffic. That is a calculation from YouTube’s headroom guidance, not a separate published YouTube target. For AV1 or H.265 at 24 Mbps, apply the same 20% rule to the total outgoing stream bitrate, including audio.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
A wired connection can help avoid some wireless variability, but YouTube does not require Ethernet or specify a particular cable. The important point is stable upload capacity with enough spare bandwidth.
Use RTMPS when your workflow supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Use the option that both YouTube and your encoder workflow support.

Test the prerecorded video as a live stream
- In the encoder or streaming service, choose the outgoing resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR rate control, and 2-second keyframe interval.
- Connect the encoder to the YouTube stream using the stream key and ingest method required by your workflow. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Run a representative test with the same kind of movement and audio as the planned prerecorded video. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test. If the stream reports trouble, check bitrate stability and upload headroom before starting the actual broadcast.
The quoted testing guidance and encoder recommendations are from YouTube Help (accessed October 3, 2026).
Do not use the upload-file bitrate by mistake
A prerecorded file uploaded to YouTube is a different workflow from a prerecorded file being sent through an encoder as a live broadcast. For 1440p SDR uploads at high frame rates, YouTube recommends 24 Mbps for encoding the upload file. That figure is not the 1440p60 live-ingest recommendation: live H.264 is 34 Mbps, while live AV1/H.265 is 24 Mbps. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the file-upload guidance.

Troubleshoot common 1440p60 bitrate problems
YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health
Confirm the outgoing bitrate is set for the codec actually being sent, then check that available upload bandwidth remains above the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Pause other uploads or network-heavy activity and test again; a momentary network disruption can interrupt the stream.
The stream disconnects despite meeting the minimum
A minimum bitrate does not guarantee a stable stream. Use the recommended bitrate if your connection and encoder can sustain it, maintain bandwidth headroom, and monitor YouTube’s health messages during a representative test.

The picture is not as expected
Verify the encoder is outputting 2560 × 1440 at 60 fps and that its selected codec matches the bitrate row being used. Check keyframe interval and rate control as well. The bitrate figures alone do not guarantee a particular visual result; the guidance does not establish a universal quality ranking between codecs.
The stream works in a test but fails during the planned broadcast
Test with representative video movement and audio, not a static or silent clip, and monitor stream health while the broadcast is running. If the connection is shared, other traffic may consume the headroom reserved for the stream.
