If your YouTube Live stream is fluctuating in OBS, first check whether OBS’s dropped-frame count is rising. Rising dropped frames usually indicate an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health, compare your OBS settings with YouTube’s recommendations, and test your upload capacity before changing settings.

If viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames, the problem may be on the viewer’s playback or delivery path instead. The two symptoms need different diagnoses.

First identify which problem you have

OBS reports dropped frames

In OBS, check the dropped-frames counter and the connection indicator while streaming. If the counter is increasing or the indicator turns yellow or red, OBS is having trouble delivering the stream to the ingest server. OBS explains that dropped frames happen when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; if too many frames are lost, the stream may disconnect. Its connection guide, dated 2024-09-30, describes this as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Viewers report buffering, but OBS does not

If OBS’s dropped-frame counter is not rising and its connection is stable, check whether the issue is limited to particular viewers, devices, or networks. A viewer can buffer because of playback or delivery conditions even when your stream is reaching YouTube normally. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but viewer-side conditions can still affect playback. See OBS streaming issues for OBS’s distinction between connection and playback symptoms.

Check YouTube’s stream health and your local output

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check the stream health indicator and timestamped messages. Warnings about incorrect bitrate or format point to a stream configuration or ingestion issue. Review YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide and live streaming error messages.
  2. Inspect OBS’s preview and a local recording. If the picture or sound is already wrong locally, check your sources, encoder errors, and CPU load. YouTube advises checking the preview and trying another encoder if the local output is impaired. If the recording looks and sounds fine, focus next on outbound connectivity.
  3. Run an upload speed test and assess stable capacity. Compare the available outbound bandwidth with your total stream bitrate. A single speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained capacity: performance can vary over time, and other devices or applications sharing the network can reduce what is available to the streaming computer.

Match bitrate and output settings to your stream

Compare OBS’s video bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. YouTube’s current H.264 encoder table gives these examples:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published encoder figures, not measurements of your connection and not a promise that your line can sustain them. The table also gives different recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so use the row for your chosen codec and output rather than applying the H.264 figures to every stream. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current table.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its streaming tips also recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.

OBS’s connection guide offers using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee. Speed-test results and network capacity can fluctuate, so the practical target is a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably while retaining headroom. If it cannot sustain the chosen output, lower the bitrate, lower the resolution, or both. YouTube also cautions that the configured bitrate must match the selected ingestion resolution unless you use a variable-resolution entrypoint.

Fix the connection or reduce the load

Lower the bitrate if capacity is insufficient

When the configured bitrate is too close to available upload capacity, reduce OBS’s video bitrate until delivery is stable. This can reduce image quality, particularly in fast-moving scenes. If the lower bitrate cannot deliver acceptable quality at your current resolution and frame rate, reduce the output resolution or frame rate as appropriate, then verify the result in Live Control Room.

Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi can be unstable, so OBS recommends trying a wired connection where possible. Test with Ethernet and compare the dropped-frame counter under similar streaming conditions. If wired networking helps, investigate the Wi-Fi signal, access point, or router. A cable is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix: ISP congestion, incorrect settings, or software interference can cause the same symptom.

Compare another ingest server

Try a different available ingest server in OBS and observe whether the connection changes. If it improves, the selected ingest path may be involved, but that comparison alone does not prove the root cause. Change one factor at a time where practical so you can tell which change affected the result.

Isolate VPN, security, and network-management software

OBS lists VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritizing utilities, and outdated network drivers among possible causes. Examples of network utilities it names include Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software. Temporarily isolate a suspected cause only if you can do so safely; restore security protections afterward and use a targeted exception if the software supports one. Check for network-driver updates and modem or router connectivity as well.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS includes Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) under Settings → Advanced → Network. When congestion occurs, this option can lower the bitrate rather than dropping as many frames. The trade-off is lower and potentially variable image quality; it does not repair the underlying connection. Use it as a continuity fallback when you cannot resolve the network issue, not as a substitute for a sustainable bitrate.
