Compare the encoder’s process and frame progress, YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, any local recording, VPS resource metrics, and outbound connectivity at the failure time. Then choose recovery for the failure you actually observed.
First, identify what “stops” means
“VOD” can mean a prerecorded video being broadcast as live content or a recording of a live gameplay session. The same initial checks apply to either, but the source affects what to inspect: a prerecorded source can reach end-of-file, while a live capture can lose its input. The exact encoder, version, command or service configuration, and failure logs are not known here, so no single root cause or command-level fix can be inferred from the symptom alone.

Capture evidence around the failure
- Record the failure signature. Save encoder logs with timestamps, process or service exit status, restart history, and YouTube Live Control Room health messages from the same period. Redact stream keys and credentials before sharing logs.
- Check process and media progress. Establish whether the encoder is running and whether its frame or progress count is advancing. Look for clues such as input EOF, a broken pipe, connection reset, or encoder error; treat these as evidence to investigate, not automatic proof of the cause.
- Compare YouTube with local output. If you record a local archive, inspect the same time range as the interruption. YouTube recommends checking an archive and encoder errors as part of stream-quality troubleshooting. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide also recommends checking CPU load and the encoder.
- Review VPS resources and outbound connectivity. Check CPU and memory pressure, disk space if recording, and provider network metrics. A short speed test does not establish that a connection can sustain the stream for hours. YouTube advises selecting a quality appropriate to the connection and testing upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains its connection and quality checks.
- Match timestamps to YouTube stream health. Compare incoming status and error messages in Live Control Room with the VPS-side logs. YouTube notes: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” YouTube Help, “Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream” recommends contacting your Internet provider when its connection test shows a problem.
Verify encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance
These settings are worth confirming, but a settings mismatch alone does not explain why a stream fails only after several hours. YouTube’s published live encoder settings recommend RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Supported video codecs listed on the page are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; audio options are AAC or MP3, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose a bitrate the VPS can sustain reliably, use representative audio and movement when testing, and monitor stream health and messages.
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended bitrates on the page accessed in 2026, not measurements of your VPS connection:

All figures are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network path can maintain them continuously. If the stream’s rate is near the connection’s sustainable limit, test at a lower rate and compare behavior over a representative period.
Choose recovery for the failure mode
If the encoder exits unexpectedly
A process supervisor or service restart policy can bring an exited encoder back up. First establish why it exited: record the exit status and logs, and ensure the service is configured to restart only in a way that will not create competing encoder instances. A restart can restore publishing, but it does not explain or fix the underlying fault.

If the encoder stays alive but stops progressing
A restart-on-exit policy may do nothing when a process remains alive but its frames stop advancing. A progress watchdog can monitor observable progress and intervene if it stops, but set its threshold based on observed behavior, log each intervention, and avoid treating a restart as a diagnosis. One public Ubuntu/FFmpeg project documents a layered setup using a restart policy, progress watchdog, and periodic restart; it is an individual operator’s example, not an official YouTube recommendation or a universally appropriate interval. If local output continues but YouTube loses the stream
Use the matching timestamps to inspect outbound connectivity, connection resets, and YouTube’s ingest status. YouTube specifically recommends checking encoder output and the outbound connection; changing hardware or replacing a VPS without evidence of a corresponding fault can obscure the real issue.

There is no evidence in the symptom alone that a router, cable, encoder device, or replacement VPS would help. A VPS-provider change is worth considering only if your logs or provider-side performance evidence point to a provider capacity or network issue. Diagnose the failing layer before spending on replacement equipment or services.

If you continue with the VPS, account for the resources and work needed to keep the process observable: sustained outbound capacity, CPU and memory headroom, disk capacity for any local archive, log retention, and a tested recovery policy. If your actual goal is an always-on YouTube loop of prerecorded gameplay rather than live gameplay capture, compare that operating burden with a cloud looping service before committing to more VPS capacity.
