Short answer: You do not need AWS Lightsail to stream gameplay to YouTube or have YouTube archive the stream as a VOD. If your encoder sends directly to YouTube, the Lightsail cost for that stream is $0. Lightsail adds cost only if you choose to run an optional relay or keep another copy in AWS.

Does a YouTube gaming stream need AWS Lightsail?

No. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, you configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then send the feed directly to YouTube. Lightsail is an optional middle step—not a YouTube requirement. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Setup What carries the stream Lightsail cost for the stream
Direct encoder-to-YouTube Your local or hardware encoder sends the feed to YouTube. $0; no Lightsail instance is needed.
Lightsail relay Your encoder sends to a Lightsail host, which forwards the feed to YouTube. Instance charges plus possible excess outbound transfer charges.
Separate AWS copy You retain or distribute another copy using AWS storage or compute. Separate resource and usage charges; the amount depends on what you retain and use.

A relay may be useful for a specific network or workflow, but it adds another service and transfer accounting to manage. The figures below price an illustrative relay host; they are not an encoding or transcoding performance test.

What does Lightsail cost in Mumbai?

AWS’s current public-IPv4 Linux pricing lists its 2 GB plan at $12 USD per month, with 2 vCPUs, 60 GB SSD storage, and a nominal 3 TB transfer allowance. AWS says Mumbai receives half the listed instance transfer allowance, making the nominal allowance for this plan 1.5 TB. The current Mumbai excess outbound rate is $0.13 USD/GB. These are AWS list prices in USD, not a tax-inclusive INR quote. Check the Amazon Lightsail Pricing page and Lightsail data-transfer terms before deploying; terms and prices can change.

The plan examples and Mumbai adjustment above reflect AWS’s current material checked on 2026-10-03; AWS does not state a publication year for these figures. How transfer charges work for a relay

AWS counts data transferred both into and out of a Lightsail instance toward the allowance. AWS says only excess outbound transfer to the internet or public IP addresses is charged. In a relay setup, the incoming feed may count toward the allowance and the forwarded feed may count again as outbound. Use the instance’s actual billing and transfer metrics rather than assuming only one stream’s worth of data is measured. AWS explains the accounting in its data-transfer documentation.

Estimate network volume from bitrate

A continuous 12 Mbps stream carries about 5.4 decimal GB per hour, calculated from bitrate and time before protocol overhead. That is an illustration, not a measured Lightsail workload. A relay could see roughly that volume coming in and another similar volume going out, before overhead and any other traffic. The actual monthly transfer depends on stream hours, route, bitrate, and other use.

For an individual bill estimate, you also need the monthly stream hours, the selected region and plan, measured inbound and outbound transfer, any retained storage or snapshots, applicable tax, and the exchange-rate or account treatment used for billing. Without those inputs, a precise INR total would be misleading.

Which stream settings affect the network bill?

Resolution, frame rate, and codec determine the bitrate you send, which affects network volume on a relay. YouTube’s current recommended H.264 bitrates include 12 Mbps for 1080p60 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Its table also gives 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 in its encoder recommendation examples; AV1/H.265 recommendations are 12 Mbps at 1080p60 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. Because codec and recommendation context affect the figures, select the row that matches your codec and settings in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guide.

  • Use YouTube’s documented encoder workflow and RTMPS recommendation for the RTMP setup.
  • Keep 20% spare upload capacity, as YouTube recommends in its streaming tips.
  • Test your upload bitrate; YouTube’s guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
  • Test the stream and monitor stream health in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a configured bitrate is stable on your route.

These settings affect network demand; they do not create a YouTube archive-hosting charge for the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and accessible in the Live tab; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Add AWS storage only if you independently choose to keep or distribute a separate copy.

How to decide whether a relay is worth paying for

  1. Start with the path. If your encoder can reliably send to YouTube directly, omit Lightsail from the streaming architecture.
  2. If you need a relay, choose the region and plan deliberately. Mumbai’s nominal allowance differs from the headline listed allowance; compare the current regional transfer terms and route suitability. Latency has not been benchmarked here, so do not assume one region is faster for your viewers or encoder.
  3. Estimate usage at your intended settings. Multiply bitrate-derived hourly volume by planned hours, and account for both incoming and outgoing relay traffic. Treat the result as an estimate, then verify actual usage in AWS billing metrics.
  4. Include non-instance charges. Consider retained storage and snapshots separately. AWS bills instances hourly up to the plan’s monthly cap; stopped instances continue to accrue charges. Deleting an instance stops its instance charges, but other retained billable resources can still cost money. See AWS billing and account management.
  5. Recheck before launch. AWS list prices, transfer terms, and YouTube recommendations can change. The figures here reflect official pages checked on 2026-10-03 and should not be treated as a tax-inclusive local quote.
