If OBS reports “encoding overloaded” while you stream a game to YouTube, first find out whether OBS is struggling to render or encode locally—or whether the stream is losing data on the way to YouTube. For local load, free up GPU headroom, simplify OBS, and lower the output frame rate or resolution only as needed. If OBS output looks healthy but YouTube reports delivery trouble, check your upload connection instead of repeatedly changing encoder settings.

First identify which part of the stream is failing

“Encoding overloaded,” choppy output, and dropped frames can have different causes. OBS composites and renders its scenes using GPU resources, while a game may be competing for the same GPU. Network delivery is a separate path: a healthy OBS output can still arrive poorly if the outbound connection cannot sustain it.

  1. Check OBS Stats and logs. Look for rendering lag or encoding overload, which point to work OBS is not completing on time. Distinguish these from network-dropped frames.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room stream health. Read its status and error messages rather than assuming a generic “bad stream” report identifies the encoder as the cause. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder output and errors, then investigating the connection if the encoder output is healthy.
  3. Run a short test stream. Reproduce the problem with the same game, scene, and output settings you plan to use. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.

A symptom alone does not establish which hardware component is limiting performance. Use the counters and stream-health status to choose the next step.

Free up GPU headroom for OBS

OBS needs time on the GPU to composite and render scenes; a game can consume the available capacity before OBS finishes its work. The OBS Project’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing contention before treating a hardware purchase as the answer.

ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774
  • Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
  • Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
  • Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
  • Cap the game’s frame rate at a level the PC can sustain, or enable V-Sync if appropriate. An uncapped game can use GPU capacity that OBS needs.
  • Lower demanding in-game graphics settings, especially if the game is already pushing the GPU hard.
  • Close other GPU-intensive programs you recognize and do not need during the stream.
  • Reduce scene complexity: remove unnecessary sources and filters and avoid keeping unused scenes active in a complicated collection.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS documents this as a quick fix for some GPU-overload cases, not a universal remedy.

These changes trade game performance or visual effects for more room to render the stream. If the counters still show overload, reduce OBS output demands in measured steps.

Adjust OBS output resolution and frame rate

In OBS, open Settings → Video. Change the output resolution or common FPS value gradually, test again, and keep the highest setting that runs reliably in your actual game scene.

Setting Where to check What changing it does
Output (Scaled) Resolution Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution A lower output resolution can reduce GPU work, at the cost of detail.
Common FPS Values Settings → Video → Common FPS Values A lower frame rate reduces work. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
Base (Canvas) Resolution Settings → Video → Base (Canvas) Resolution Changing the canvas can require repositioning sources. OBS generally does not recommend lowering it unless GPU resources are severely constrained.

Try reducing the output resolution or switching from 60 to 30 fps before changing the base canvas. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps, but that platform limit does not mean a particular gaming PC can render and encode every scene at 60 fps.

Check the encoder and YouTube ingest target

YouTube’s current general encoder settings guidance specifies H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its published H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 60 fps is a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a machine or connection can sustain those settings.

In OBS, check that the selected encoder and output values match the target you intend to send to YouTube. If you use a hardware encoder, it can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; OBS explains this in its hardware encoding guide. Hardware encoding is not automatically a fix when a game has already saturated the GPU, so retest after changing encoder paths and watch the same OBS and YouTube indicators.

Rule out upload and delivery problems

Choose a stream quality your upload connection can reliably sustain, not merely the highest bitrate listed for a resolution. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Run an upload test under conditions close to your normal streaming setup, then leave headroom rather than setting bitrate at the connection’s best-case result.

If OBS’s encoder output appears healthy but YouTube reports a connection problem, investigate outbound connectivity. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to test the outbound connection and contact your internet provider if that test finds a problem. Repeatedly lowering encoder presets will not resolve a separate connection fault.

Keep a local recording as a VOD backup

A local recording can preserve a copy if a live archive is missing, but it does not cure encoder overload. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends a local archive backup; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Before relying on a recording, make a short test and confirm the file is being written and growing on the intended drive.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube livestream, rather than stream live gameplay from your PC, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera or gameplay encoder. See StreamNeo, or start a free day.
