Start by checking the stream’s exact status and any error in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then confirm that your encoder is running and sending usable video and audio. “Waiting for viewers” is not a documented YouTube diagnosis, so the message alone cannot identify the cause. The right fix depends on whether you are using an external encoder, streaming directly from a console, or replaying a recording.

First, identify what “rerun” and “waiting for viewers” mean on your screen

A rerun might mean restarting a live broadcast, replaying an archived stream, or sending recorded gameplay as a new live broadcast. These are different situations and may not share a cause. YouTube’s reviewed help and API documentation does not define the exact phrase “waiting for viewers” as a diagnostic state.

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and note the exact status or error shown. Check whether YouTube is receiving stream data and whether the broadcast is scheduled, in preview, or live. Google’s API documentation distinguishes noData, meaning the backend has no information about stream health, from error, meaning the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. Do not treat the phrase on your screen as interchangeable with either status. See YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation.

Fix an external gaming encoder step by step

YouTube lists an encoder as a common way to stream gameplay. The following checks apply when software such as a third-party encoder sends the broadcast to YouTube; they may not apply to a console-native stream.

  1. Read the Live Control Room status and error. Record the exact wording, whether YouTube is receiving data, and whether the stream is scheduled, previewing, or live. This is more useful than diagnosing from “waiting for viewers” alone.
  2. If the encoder cannot start, refresh its stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Stream, copy the stream key, and paste it into the encoder’s stream-key field. If the software connects to YouTube by signing in and does not use a key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team. Do not share your stream key; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Check the encoder’s output. Update the encoder to its latest version. Inspect its preview and, if available, a local recording for missing or distorted picture and sound. Check the encoder’s error messages and CPU load in its live dashboard. If the output remains faulty, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder.
  4. Test the outbound internet connection. If the encoder preview and output appear healthy but YouTube is not receiving the stream reliably, run a connection speed test. If it indicates a connection problem, contact your internet service provider.
  5. Report a continuing problem with details. Give YouTube the exact Live Control Room status or error, your streaming method, the encoder name and version if applicable, and what you found in the local preview and connection test. YouTube says to report an issue that continues after troubleshooting.

These checks follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance. It does not promise that waiting a fixed number of minutes will resolve this message. An API lifecycle description of a 5–10 second transition applies to a particular broadcast state flow, not to the viewer-facing phrase “waiting for viewers”; see Life of a Broadcast.

If you are streaming directly from a console

First confirm whether the broadcast is being sent directly by the console or through an encoder on a computer. YouTube’s setup guidance lists direct streaming from modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles, as well as encoder, mobile, and webcam methods. If the console sends the stream directly, encoder-specific steps such as pasting a key into encoder software may not apply. Use the status and error shown in Live Control Room, then follow the console’s own broadcast checks. YouTube’s overview is at Get started with live streaming.
