YouTube Create lets you turn clips already on your phone into a long-form YouTube video or a Short, then export the edit to your phone or upload it to YouTube. The app is free and has no ads, according to YouTube Help. You need a Google sign-in, a supported device and a supported location.
Check that YouTube Create is available to you
Before downloading, check the current device and country requirements on YouTube’s Create overview and available locations pages. Availability and requirements can change.
- Android: YouTube Help currently says the phone needs at least 4 GB of RAM.
- iPhone: YouTube Help currently lists iPhone XR and newer running iOS 17 or later.
- Location: The current list names Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- Sign-in: A Google account is required.
If Create is unavailable in your country or your phone does not meet the listed requirements, you may not be able to install or use it; consult YouTube Help for the latest eligibility details.
Start a project and import clips
- Open YouTube Create and sign in with your Google account.
- Tap the plus button to start a project.
- Select photos or videos from your phone’s gallery. You can select multiple items, including media brought onto the device from other apps.
- Tap Import to bring the selected media into the project.
Your saved work appears under Recent Projects. Open a project’s menu there to rename, duplicate or delete it, as described in YouTube’s project guide.

Add and adjust text
Text is an editable layer in your project, so you can change its appearance, placement and how long it appears without baking it into the original clip. YouTube’s text guide documents this workflow:
- Open the project and choose Text.
- Add plain text or choose a text effect, then enter the wording you want.
- Adjust the text’s style as needed: size, font, color, background, outline, shadow or animation.
- Set the text layer’s duration and drag it in the frame to reposition it.
Preview the result in the editor so you can check that the wording is legible and appears at the intended point in the video. YouTube also documents templates: choose photos or videos, select portions of clips, then export or continue editing in the app. See the templates guide for the current options.

Preview, save to your phone or upload
When the edit is ready, preview it from the project’s editing screen. You can export a copy to your phone or use the export flow to upload the video directly to YouTube. Create supports uploading both long-form videos and Shorts, according to YouTube’s save and upload guide.
Save an exported video on your phone
- From the project, open More.
- Choose Export.
- Select the video quality offered in the export flow, then export the video.
Upload directly to YouTube
- Start the export flow and choose Upload to YouTube.
- Add the video details and select its privacy and audience settings.
- Complete the upload. The video is published according to the settings you selected.
Know what happens to Shorts Audio Library music
The export destination matters if your edit uses music from YouTube’s Shorts Audio Library. YouTube says that music is automatically removed when you export to your device a video longer than 15 seconds. Direct uploading to YouTube supports longer licensed music clips, up to 60 seconds. So an exported file and a direct upload may not retain the same licensed music; check YouTube’s export and upload guidance before choosing a workflow.

Optional AI features are not available everywhere
YouTube labels Create’s AI-generated features experimental and limits them to select creators and countries. They are separate from the general app availability list, and their rollout can vary by feature. For example, YouTube lists Gemini Omni video generation in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States; it creates vertical clips up to 10 seconds. The separate Edit with AI feature is listed for a different set of countries and can build a draft from selected photos or videos, voiceover, music and captions. Check YouTube’s AI feature help page for current eligibility rather than assuming these tools are part of every installation.
