Under YouTube’s current Developer Policies, most API data must be deleted or refreshed within 30 calendar days, while a limited set of authorized analytics and statistics data can be kept longer if authorization is checked every 30 days. User deletion requests and some consent-revocation flows have shorter or separate deadlines.
How long can you keep YouTube API data?
First classify each record as Authorized Data or Non-Authorized Data. Authorized Data is obtained through user credentials after an active user expressly authorizes access. Non-Authorized Data is accessible without user credentials. YouTube’s Developer Policies, last updated September 14, 2026, set different conditions for these categories.

The 30-day period is a maximum for the covered categories, not a blanket license to collect or retain any data. See YouTube’s Developer Policies for the controlling requirements.
Which YouTube API data can be retained longer than 30 days?
A narrow exception covers YouTube Analytics API data, YouTube Reporting API data, and certain statistics from other YouTube APIs when the data is Authorized Data. It may be retained as long as necessary for the purpose the user consented to, provided the Client checks every 30 days that authorization remains valid.

YouTube’s example involving a video’s view count also requires checking that the video has not been deleted. The longer-retention exception does not cover Non-Authorized statistics. Do not assume the exception applies to a project merely because it uses an analytics API.
What changed in 2026?
Google’s revision history says additional policies for derived metrics and data storage were added May 4, 2026, and clarified June 1, 2026. The route to storing some statistics beyond 30 days or creating derived metrics is limited to audited developers with analytics use cases who explicitly applied and were approved. Developers without that permission must follow the ordinary Developer Policies. Check whether approval applies to the specific API project; the exception is not generally available.

How should an API Client manage cached records?
YouTube does not prescribe a database schema in the cited policy. A practical way to implement its separate rules is to track the retention category and its conditions for each cached record, instead of assigning one global time-to-live to all API data.
- Record whether the data is Authorized or Non-Authorized, the associated consent and purpose, and when it was last refreshed.
- For data covered by the longer-retention exception, track the next 30-day authorization check; for the cited view-count example, also track whether the video still exists.
- Schedule refresh or deletion early enough to meet the applicable 30-calendar-day maximum for ordinary categories.
- Route user deletion requests for prompt handling and make the 7-day outer deadline visible in operational procedures.
These are implementation suggestions, not additional quoted YouTube requirements. The metadata and statistics rules do not permit copying or storing YouTube audiovisual content, or enabling offline playback, without YouTube’s prior written approval.

What must user-facing features show?
YouTube requires API Clients to display the most updated API Data available in user-facing presentations. Historical data may also be shown when its time context is accurate. For example, a chart of an earlier period should identify the period represented rather than present that value as current.
Make reasonable efforts to keep stored data consistent with current API data, including reflecting metadata changes and view-count updates as quickly as possible. The policy does not supply a universal update interval for every field, so do not imply that all values update instantly.

How quickly must you delete data after a user request?
If a user asks the API Client to delete stored data related to them, delete it as soon as possible and no later than 7 calendar days. This removes the Client’s stored copy; it does not delete the corresponding data held by YouTube. Give users a way to make the request and explain that distinction.

User revokes consent through the API Client
Revoke the authorization token immediately. Delete Authorized Data obtained under that consent as soon as possible and within 7 calendar days.

User revokes access through Google security settings
The policy separately addresses this route: delete related API Data, with a maximum of 30 calendar days for these deletions. Do not treat this as the same flow or deadline as a user asking the API Client to delete their stored data.
YouTube API access or agreement ends
Termination is a separate contractual obligation. Stop accessing and using YouTube Property and delete YouTube API Services, including API Data, in your possession or control.
Why do these requirements matter?
YouTube’s Terms of Service incorporate its Developer Policies. The Developer Policies and revision history are useful references, but Google says the legal documents themselves are authoritative. Violations may lead to reduced quota, revoked API credentials, or other action, including termination.
