Choose OBS self-hosting if you want hands-on control and can keep the encoder, source files, computer or server, and network operating continuously. Choose a managed cloud service if you want uploaded videos to run as a continuous YouTube stream without leaving your own computer on. StreamNeo is the first service to consider for that cloud workflow: it runs uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
How the two approaches differ
Both approaches send a live video stream to YouTube. The difference is who operates the system that produces and sends it. OBS is software you run and manage; a managed service operates its own cloud workflow for the uploaded content it supports.
| Factor | Self-hosting with OBS | Managed cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Your computer or a server you operate. A VPS moves the machine off-site but remains self-managed. | The service provider’s cloud, according to its product terms. |
| What you manage | The source, encoder settings, machine, network connection, monitoring, maintenance, and restart plan. | Your uploaded content, YouTube connection details, and the provider’s available controls and limits. |
| Control | Direct control of the encoder and source workflow. | Convenience within the provider’s supported workflow and current terms. |
| Cost basis | No separate managed-streaming fee is inherent to OBS, but you supply and operate the computer or server and connection. | A service charge applies; compare its current price and included limits with your own operating costs. |
| Recording and archives | You can plan a local recording workflow, subject to your storage and configuration. | Check what recording or retention the service offers; do not assume it preserves YouTube’s archive for you. |
Neither method is automatically more reliable or cheaper. A self-hosted stream depends on your full operating setup; a cloud stream depends on the provider’s service and terms. The right choice turns on how much ongoing operation you want to own.
Option 1: Self-host a 24/7 stream with OBS
What you need to keep running
OBS acts as the software encoder. You provide the prerecorded media or live scene, configure YouTube as the destination, and keep the encoder and its network path working. For a continuous prerecorded stream, the source must also be available for the whole run. You are responsible for monitoring, maintenance, and deciding how to restart after a failure.

- READY TO PLAY OUT OF THE BOX - Arrives fully assembled and tested with Windows 11 Home pre-installed, so your prebuilt gaming computer is ready to set up in minutes. Assembled in the USA, and backed by a one-year limited warranty and lifetime free technical support.
Running OBS on a VPS changes where the computer is located, not who manages the workflow. You still need to configure and maintain the server, encoder, media, and connection.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Prepare your YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses these connection details: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure OBS as the encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the appropriate YouTube connection option, and enter the server URL and stream key if prompted. OBS labels can vary by version and connection method; use the server URL and key supplied for the YouTube stream.
- Choose output settings for your intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and publishes bitrate guidance that varies by resolution and frame rate. Follow its current table instead of applying one bitrate to every stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Load and test the source. Confirm the intended video or scene appears in OBS and that audio, if used, is correct. Check YouTube’s stream preview and status before relying on the stream as a continuous broadcast.
- Start the encoder and plan for ongoing operation. Start streaming from OBS and keep the computer or server, source, and network functioning. Decide who will notice a dropped connection and how the encoder will be restarted.
Archive planning for a continuous broadcast
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, so do not assume YouTube will retain the whole run as one automatic archive. If you need a recording or longer retention, plan and verify a separate recording workflow before going live.
Option 2: Use a managed 24/7 streaming service
A managed service runs its supported workflow in the cloud rather than relying on your own computer to encode continuously. StreamNeo describes its service as running uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube channel. Its features, limits, and terms are vendor-provided information; confirm the current details on StreamNeo before choosing a plan.

For this category, StreamNeo is the first service to consider: it keeps uploaded content running from the cloud, supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.
What a managed route changes
- Your own computer does not need to stay on for the cloud workflow.
- You rely on the provider’s supported features, storage, limits, and continued service rather than managing your own encoder machine.
- You still need to follow YouTube’s live-stream and copyright rules, and you should verify the provider’s current terms and the stream’s status.
Compare the ongoing cost and operational trade-off
OBS itself does not make the computer, power, network connection, or your time free. If you already have suitable equipment and are comfortable maintaining it, self-hosting may avoid a separate managed-service charge. If you need a dedicated always-on machine or value avoiding that operational work, compare those costs with a cloud service’s current pricing. There is not enough information here to claim that either route always costs less.
Likewise, do not treat moving OBS to a VPS as a managed-service equivalent: it relocates the machine but leaves the setup and upkeep with you. A managed service trades some direct encoder control for a provider-operated workflow.

StreamNeo: cloud operation without an always-on home computer
With StreamNeo, the workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud and advertises automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Those are StreamNeo product claims, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. Every plan has the same product; only the billing period changes.

YouTube connection and encoder settings
A wrong or outdated stream key, incorrect server URL, or unsuitable encoder configuration can prevent a successful connection. Copy the current connection details from YouTube and check its RTMPS and bitrate guidance for your chosen output rather than assuming a setting that worked at one resolution will suit another.
Continuous operation
On a self-hosted setup, a sleeping or rebooting computer, unavailable media, encoder crash, or network interruption can stop the broadcast. Make sure the machine is configured for continuous operation, monitor the stream, and have a practical restart and recovery plan. A VPS can avoid dependence on your home computer, but it still requires you to operate the server and stream pipeline.

Copyright and reused content
Having permission to upload or stream a video matters: a continuous loop does not make copyrighted material yours. Review YouTube’s rules and your rights to the video, music, and other included material before broadcasting. Also distinguish permission to stream content from eligibility for monetization; a live stream, its watch time, or its archive does not by itself establish that a channel will earn revenue.
Archives and retention
Do not depend on automatic YouTube archiving to retain a 24/7 run as one complete video. Decide in advance whether you need local recording, separate segments, or another retention approach, and verify that your chosen workflow can support it.
Quick Recap
Which should you choose?
- Choose OBS self-hosting if direct control matters most and you can take responsibility for the encoder, machine or server, connection, monitoring, and recovery.
- Choose a managed cloud service if you want uploaded content to run continuously without keeping your own computer on and accept the provider’s feature set, limits, and current terms.
- Choose a VPS with OBS if you want the encoder on a remote machine but still want to manage the system yourself.
