An ISP DNS change may be related to a YouTube 24/7 stream stopping, but timing alone does not prove that DNS caused it. First identify whether YouTube playback failed for a viewer or the channel’s outgoing broadcast stopped: those are different problems. Compare the affected connection with another device or network, check the DNS settings, and—if you operate the stream—inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s health messages and your encoder output before changing settings.

First, identify what stopped

“The stream stopped” can describe a viewer who cannot play a live video, a broadcast that viewers say has ended, or an encoder that disconnected from YouTube. The first two can look similar from the outside, but only the broadcaster’s encoder sends the live feed to YouTube. DNS or connection trouble on a viewer’s device does not, by itself, show that the channel’s broadcast stopped.

  • One viewer cannot play it: investigate that device, app or browser, and its network.
  • Several viewers report trouble, but the broadcaster still sees a healthy stream: check playback from independent devices and networks before concluding the broadcast is down.
  • The channel’s live broadcast ended or the encoder disconnected: check Live Control Room health, the encoder’s output and its outbound connection.

Record the stream URL, affected device and app or browser, ISP, Wi-Fi or wired connection, and the local time and timezone. Note whether the problem affects one device, every device on the same ISP, or viewers on separate networks. These observations help distinguish a device setting from a network-path or broadcast problem.

Test whether the issue follows the ISP connection

  1. Try the same stream on another supported device using the original connection. If it works there, the first device or app is a stronger lead than the ISP’s network.
  2. Try the affected device on an independent connection. For example, compare home Wi-Fi with mobile data, if available. If playback works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, the difference points toward the home network or its ISP path; it does not prove DNS is responsible.
  3. Compare another device on the original ISP connection. If multiple devices have the same problem on that connection, a shared router, DNS setting, or ISP path becomes more plausible than a fault limited to one device.
  4. Keep a short record of repeat tests. Write down the time, network, device, result, and any error message. A single successful or failed comparison is useful evidence, not a definitive diagnosis.

YouTube’s playback troubleshooting recommends changing the internet connection when investigating video playback problems. If the video plays over one connection but not another, preserve that comparison for the ISP or support team.

Check DNS without assuming it is the cause

DNS translates a domain name into an address. A resolver change can be relevant if YouTube is inaccessible or resolving incorrectly on one network, but a DNS lookup alone does not establish that the video transport is healthy or continuous. YouTube’s video-error guidance says: “Confirm that you’re using your preferred DNS servers and that no third-party applications have modified them.”

  1. Record the current configuration before changing it. Check the affected device’s network settings and the router’s DNS configuration. Note whether the device gets DNS automatically or uses a specified resolver.
  2. Check for software that may have changed it. VPNs, security products, filtering tools, and other network utilities can sometimes set DNS on a device. Review any recent changes rather than assuming the ISP changed the setting on every device.
  3. Compare with the intended resolver. If the device or router is configured to use a resolver you did not choose, document what it shows and when you noticed it. Avoid switching to a random public resolver as a first response; a change can alter symptoms without identifying the underlying fault.
  4. Change one setting at a time, if you choose to test a different resolver. Record the original setting so you can restore it. Repeat the same playback test on the same device and connection, then note whether the result changed.

TRAI’s 2021 consultation paper describes recursive DNS resolvers as commonly operated by an ISP or a third party and notes that Indian ISPs use both their own DNS services and other providers. That general context does not establish what resolver your ISP, router, or device is using, or whether a DNS change caused this particular interruption.

If you are a viewer: rule out playback problems

On the affected device, restart the YouTube app or browser and check for available updates. If using the YouTube app, clear its cache where the device provides that option. Then try the stream on another supported device and compare its behavior over Wi-Fi and an independent connection.

Check the playback quality and whether other YouTube videos also fail. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance recommends a minimum connection speed of 7 Mbps for HD viewing. That figure is a viewing recommendation for TV playback; it is not a broadcaster’s upload target or a required encoder bitrate.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

If YouTube alone is inaccessible on the ISP connection while other services work, the issue may involve a connection problem or network-level blocking. YouTube’s guidance recommends contacting the network administrator or ISP in that situation. Avoid treating buffering or a failed DNS lookup as proof that the channel’s live broadcast itself has ended.

If you operate the channel: inspect stream health and encoder output

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and note the health status and exact message. Record the timestamp and color. YouTube describes red health indicators as critical errors and yellow indicators as moderate errors.
  2. Check whether the encoder is still transmitting. Review its status and logs, and confirm that the local program output still looks and sounds as expected.
  3. Compare encoder output with YouTube’s health message. YouTube’s workflow indicates that healthy encoder output can point to an outbound connection issue. Test the connection from the broadcaster’s location and preserve the results.
  4. Use the error text to guide changes. YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance identifies format and bitrate problems among possible issues. If the message identifies a specific format or bitrate error, investigate that setting; do not randomly alter encoder settings when the reported problem points elsewhere.
  5. If a connection problem is found, contact the ISP. Provide the time of the interruption and the encoder and Live Control Room evidence. If the encoder reports a specific error instead, consult the relevant encoder or YouTube support route.

Why YouTube might work on mobile data but not Wi-Fi

Mobile data and Wi-Fi usually take different network paths. If the same device plays the same stream on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi, that narrows the issue to something specific to the Wi-Fi path: the device’s Wi-Fi configuration, router, configured DNS, or ISP connection are among the possibilities. It does not isolate DNS on its own.

Escalate with evidence, not just the timing

When contacting the ISP, share the exact dates and local times, the affected stream or domains, whether the problem occurs on multiple devices, the DNS configuration you observed, and results from Wi-Fi versus an independent connection. Ask the ISP to investigate the connection and resolver behavior rather than stating as fact that a DNS change caused the interruption.

If you are the broadcaster and Live Control Room or encoder logs show a broadcast-side error, include the health message, timestamp, and whether local encoder output remained healthy. Google Public DNS troubleshooting recommends contacting the ISP for persistent resolver issues involving Google properties and asking it to reach Google where needed. A lookup result by itself does not establish whether the video connection can carry a continuous stream.
