To run a YouTube news ticker over looping video, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with the stream’s server URL and key, then check the real output in preview before going live. Match resolution and bitrate to the upload connection you can sustain. Plan for restarts or multiple archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a 24/7 transmission is not one guaranteed continuous replay.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as a starting point, not a guarantee that your internet connection can carry a given setting. Test the actual upload connection with representative motion and audio, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported protocols, H.264, H.265 and AV1 codecs, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It supports up to 60 fps. These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not a promise about what your network can sustain or what every viewer will receive. Leave room for normal connection variation; if the stream drops frames or becomes unstable, test a lower bitrate or resolution. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) where available.
Build and connect the live stream
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Set the title, audience, and privacy. If scheduling, share the watch-page URL with viewers who need advance notice. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
- Copy the connection details: In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube explains how to manage stream settings.
- Configure the encoder: Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval. Use the relevant YouTube bitrate recommendation as a baseline and test the connection at the chosen output.
- Compose the ticker and loop: Add the ticker and looping video in your encoder workflow. Check text size, contrast, placement, motion, transitions, and audio. YouTube does not prescribe a ticker generator, exact placement, font size, or loop duration, so judge those choices in the actual output rather than assuming one layout will work everywhere.
- Preview before going live: Start the encoder and wait for Live Control Room to show the incoming signal and preview. Inspect moving footage, ticker readability, sound, and any black or silent gaps. Check the watch page on the devices your audience is likely to use, then go live when the output is correct.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting up encoders two hours before an event and starting them 15 minutes before it. These are preparation recommendations for scheduled events, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee. Continue monitoring the stream after it starts.

Make the ticker work in the actual layout
Test the ticker against the video it will overlay: moving backgrounds, bright scenes, and transitions can make text harder to read than a static preview suggests. Use sufficient contrast and avoid placing essential information where YouTube’s presentation could crop or obscure it. This is production advice; YouTube does not publish a ticker-specific safe-area measurement.
YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live formats, including vertical layout options. If you plan to offer both, inspect each output separately: text that fits comfortably in a horizontal frame may be cropped or too small in a vertical presentation. Choose viewer controls deliberately
Live Control Room offers privacy, latency, DVR, and auto-start and auto-stop settings. Select them for the audience experience you want, then test them on the watch page. DVR lets viewers pause and resume; lower latency can reduce the delay but may increase buffering. The right choice depends on how much interaction matters and how tolerant viewers are of buffering. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
Plan separately for continuous transmission and archives
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That gives operators a documented limit to plan around: a 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as one indefinitely archived replay. If you need replayable coverage, plan for stream ends and restarts that produce manageable segments. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a seamless restart method for indefinite broadcasts, so do not assume a single uninterrupted archive will result.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is sending to the server URL and key shown for the correct stream, and that the encoder is running. If you recently reset the key, replace the old one in the encoder.
- Unstable video or dropped frames: Compare the selected bitrate with the connection’s tested upload capacity. Reduce bitrate or output resolution and test again; YouTube’s recommendations are not a substitute for a real connection test.
- Ticker is hard to read: Check the moving video and transitions in Live Control Room and on the watch page. Adjust size, contrast, or placement, then test again. For vertical output, inspect the vertical layout rather than relying on the horizontal preview.
- Unexpected silence, black gaps, or abrupt transitions: Inspect the loop, transitions, audio, and encoder output in preview with representative material before going live.
- Replay is missing or split: A 24/7 transmission is not guaranteed to become one archive. YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours; plan around stream endings and separate replay segments.
