OBS documentation does not identify Replay Buffer as a cause of YouTube disconnections. Replay Buffer is a recording feature; OBS says dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the ingest server or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A stream dropping while Replay Buffer is enabled is a correlation, not proof that the feature caused it. Check YouTube’s stream-health message, OBS logs, upload capacity, and encoder load, then compare otherwise identical runs with Replay Buffer off and on.

Does OBS Replay Buffer cause YouTube disconnections?

There is no documented basis for treating Replay Buffer as the cause. OBS describes Replay Buffer as an output and recording feature, and its Advanced Output mode allows streaming and recording to be configured independently. The official material reviewed does not say that Replay Buffer causes a live connection to drop. OBS Studio overview

OBS’s connection guide instead points to dropped frames and an unstable connection to the remote ingest server, or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It warns: “If you drop too many frames, you may be disconnected from the streaming server.” The guide is dated September 30, 2024. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

That does not rule out a machine-specific interaction. Recording and streaming can draw on the same system, and an observed difference when Replay Buffer is active is worth investigating. But without logs and a controlled comparison, the toggle alone cannot identify the cause.

What to capture when the stream drops

Collect evidence before changing several settings at once. Note the time of each interruption and the exact stream-health message shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Save an OBS log that spans the failure, and record the dropped-frame counter and any encoder or CPU warnings.

  • YouTube stream health: Read the specific status and error message rather than inferring a cause from Replay Buffer. YouTube’s Live Control Room displays stream-health status and guidance. YouTube stream metrics
  • OBS connection state: Note whether the dropped-frame counter rises before the disconnect. OBS says this counter reflects connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS connection troubleshooting
  • Encoder and local archive: Check for encoder errors and CPU load. If you are recording locally, check whether the archive continues to grow through the live interruption and whether it contains quality problems. Those observations help distinguish an ingest connection loss from a broader encoding or system problem. YouTube live stream troubleshooting

Check upload capacity against your stream bitrate

Test upload speed, not just download speed, and account for other devices or applications sharing the connection. YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%; shared use can leave less bandwidth for the encoder. This is headroom guidance, not a measurement of your line or a guarantee against interruptions. YouTube streaming tips

YouTube’s encoder guide lists these recommended H.264 bitrates for the specified formats. They are recommendations, not universal settings: codec, resolution, and frame rate matter, and your actual connection must sustain the chosen bitrate.

Format YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, warning not to exceed four seconds. Use the current guidance for the codec and resolution you actually stream; a bitrate that is too high for stable upload capacity can contribute to dropped frames. The cited YouTube pages do not state a publication year. YouTube encoder settings

  1. Try a different YouTube ingest server. OBS recommends testing a different server to see whether the issue is destination-specific. If the stream stabilizes, that is useful evidence, not proof that Replay Buffer was responsible.
  2. Reduce the video bitrate. Test a lower bitrate that still suits your required quality, then watch the dropped-frame counter and YouTube stream health. OBS lists lowering bitrate as a connection troubleshooting step; YouTube advises choosing a reliable quality for the available connection. OBS connection troubleshooting YouTube encoder settings
  3. Prefer a wired network for diagnosis. OBS identifies Wi-Fi instability, modems and routers, network cards, switches, extenders, and cables as possible contributors. Check the physical connection and network equipment, especially if interruptions are intermittent.
  4. Check software that can interfere with traffic. OBS names VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible factors. If a temporary test indicates that security software is interfering, turn it back on and add an OBS exception as appropriate; do not leave protection disabled.
  5. Update the encoder software and inspect system load. YouTube recommends updating the encoder and checking dashboard errors and CPU load when output is poor. Review the local archive as well: if it is also impaired, investigate encoding or system performance; if it remains healthy while the live ingest drops, focus attention on the network path and destination connection. YouTube live stream troubleshooting
  6. Test outbound connectivity and involve your ISP if indicated. YouTube recommends checking outbound connectivity and contacting the internet provider when those tests show a problem. If encoder output looks healthy, YouTube says the outbound internet connection may be the issue. YouTube live stream troubleshooting

Test whether Replay Buffer changes the result

A controlled comparison can show whether the symptom tracks with the setting on your setup. This is a diagnostic inference, not a fix prescribed by OBS or YouTube.

  1. Use the same scene, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, ingest server, network path, and general workload for both runs.
  2. Run one comparable stream with Replay Buffer disabled, then another with it enabled. Avoid changing other settings between runs.
  3. For each run, note interruption times, OBS log entries, dropped frames, YouTube’s exact health message, encoder or CPU errors, and whether the local archive continues to grow.
  4. Repeat the comparison if practical. A repeatable difference is evidence to investigate; one different outcome may reflect changing network conditions.

If interruptions occur only in the runs with Replay Buffer enabled, inspect the logs for encoding or resource warnings and confirm the selected Output mode and separate stream and recording configuration. That pattern justifies further diagnosis on your system; it does not establish a general Replay Buffer defect. OBS’s overview documents independent stream and recording configuration in Advanced Output, but the sources cited here do not quantify Replay Buffer’s resource impact for a particular computer. Common symptoms and what to check next

What you observe Where to focus
Dropped frames rise before the disconnect Upload capacity, bitrate, shared network use, Wi-Fi or network equipment, and ingest server. OBS associates dropped frames with an unstable or insufficient connection.
YouTube shows a specific stream-health error Follow the message and instructions in Live Control Room; record it and its time instead of guessing from the Replay Buffer setting.
Encoder errors or high CPU load appear Inspect OBS logs and encoder settings, update the encoder, and compare the live stream with the local archive.
The local archive remains healthy while live ingest drops That pattern points troubleshooting toward the outbound network or ingest connection, though it does not by itself prove which component failed.
Only Replay Buffer-enabled runs disconnect in a controlled comparison Review resource and encoding logs and verify Output configuration; treat the repeatable association as system-specific evidence, not proof of a universal cause.
