There is no reliable India-wide break-even price for running a YouTube stream around the clock from a refurbished desktop versus a cloud virtual machine (VM). A fair comparison needs the same stream settings and operating period, plus the desktop’s measured power use and local electricity tariff and a cloud quote that includes compute, storage and outbound data. For a continuous stream, outbound traffic can be substantial: a constant 3 Mbps feed uses about 0.97 decimal TB over 30 days, while 8 Mbps uses about 2.59 decimal TB, before protocol overhead.
What determines the cost?
A 24/7 stream has costs beyond the machine that sends it. The desktop route starts with a hardware purchase and adds electricity, maintenance and replacement risk. A self-managed VM has recurring compute charges and may also incur storage, public IP, network egress and encoding charges. Neither route is automatically cheaper: compare the total cost for the same stream quality, uptime and period.

Use current quotes for the city and configuration you will actually use. For example, Google Cloud lists Mumbai and Delhi regions, but its pricing varies by region and machine type; a VM’s compute rate alone does not establish the full cost of a stream.
Estimate the stream’s monthly data use
Bitrate is a key input because it determines how much data continuously leaves the stream source. The following figures are calculations from a constant bitrate over 30 days, not provider measurements. They use decimal terabytes and exclude protocol overhead.

YouTube Help recommends H.264 at 8 Mbps for 720p/60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. The 10 Mbps and 17 Mbps recommendations also translate to substantial monthly transfer if held constant, so calculate the volume for your chosen bitrate rather than assuming a VM’s advertised transfer allowance will cover it. Confirm whether the selected provider includes outbound data or charges separately, and check the allowance and egress rate for the specific India region and plan.
To estimate data for your own settings: bitrate in megabits per second × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000 gives decimal TB for 30 days. Treat the result as an estimate; protocol overhead and actual bitrate behavior can change the total.
Calculate the desktop’s monthly equivalent
Separate the cash paid to acquire the computer from its amortized monthly cost. A useful estimate is:

Monthly equivalent = (purchase price − expected resale value) ÷ planned ownership months + electricity + maintenance or replacement parts.

Measure the desktop’s average power draw while running the actual stream workload if possible. A machine that can loop a file is not necessarily proven to encode the intended feed continuously.
- Measure average draw in watts under the planned encoding workload.
- Calculate monthly use: average watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000 = kWh per 30-day month.
- Apply your utility’s applicable marginal rate and bill adjustments to that kWh estimate.
- Add the hardware’s amortized cost and a realistic allowance for maintenance or replacement parts.
India does not have one household electricity rate that can be applied to everyone. Retail tariffs are set by state electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize domestic consumers. Your bill can depend on the utility, tariff category, consumption slab and applicable adjustments. Use the current schedule for your utility rather than a national average.

Build a complete cloud VM estimate
Price the full configuration, not just the headline hourly compute rate. A monthly cloud estimate should include:
- VM hourly price multiplied by the actual hours it will run.
- Disk or other storage charges.
- A public IP charge, if applicable.
- Outbound traffic at the selected region’s rate, after any included allowance.
- Any GPU, accelerator or managed media-processing charge the workload requires.
- Applicable tax and billing terms.
Cloud prices, included transfer and availability depend on the provider, region and configuration. A provider’s generic allowance may not apply to a particular India-region bundle. Verify current terms directly before committing, and calculate the required transfer from your stream bitrate.

Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, source-loop behavior and uptime assumption for both options. Compare the total over a shared period, while showing the desktop’s first-month cash outlay separately from its amortized monthly cost. Include the parts that are easy to omit: home electricity and connectivity on one side; VM storage, IP and egress on the other.

- Upfront cash: a desktop requires an initial purchase; a VM is billed on its provider’s terms.
- Encoding: confirm the desktop or VM can sustain the chosen workload. YouTube’s ingestion recommendations do not specify which computer or VM size will encode it.
- Network and power: a home setup depends on local power and internet; a cloud setup depends on the VM and provider network.
- Administration and recovery: a desktop owner handles the operating system and encoder; a self-managed VM owner handles the server, monitoring and recovery. A machine or VM being capable of streaming does not establish that it will recover from a crash or interruption.
There is no defensible numeric break-even without a current refurbished listing, a specified city and utility tariff, and a dated quote for a complete cloud configuration. Those inputs can change the result. Price your own use case rather than treating an illustrative calculation as an India-wide answer.

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Its live encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Recommended H.264 bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate: 8 Mbps for 720p/60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. These are platform ingestion settings, not a recommendation for desktop hardware or VM size. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming, and explains that you connect it using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the stream key private. Test before going live and watch stream health so you can identify problems with the feed before relying on it continuously.

YouTube states that all streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a guarantee that a 24-hour broadcast or the encoder will remain available and healthy for the full period. Plan and test reconnect behavior, monitoring and recovery separately.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Technical ability to loop a video does not establish that you have the rights to stream it or that it complies with YouTube’s channel policies. Before using a recording or playlist, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the video and audio, including any music or other material in it. Repeatedly broadcasting content does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization or other policy requirements. Check YouTube’s current rules for your content and channel rather than treating a continuous stream as a workaround.
