Measure each device’s wall power while it runs your intended stream, then multiply its energy use by the marginal electricity rate that applies to your home. A power-supply rating or generic laptop wattage cannot tell you what your setup will cost.
How to estimate the electricity cost
For a steady load, convert measured watts to energy and multiply by your applicable marginal tariff:
- Daily energy: watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
- Annual energy: watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per year. A continuously running watt uses 8.76 kWh in a 365-day year.
- Estimated energy charge: kWh × applicable marginal rate in ₹/kWh.
These are unit conversions, not estimates of what either device consumes. The resulting figure covers the energy charge calculated at that rate, not necessarily fixed charges, duties, taxes, or other items on your bill. Your effective rate depends on your state, distribution utility, consumption slab, and bill components. The Central Electricity Authority’s tariff and duty compilation is a reference for published tariffs; use the rate and bill rules that apply to your own household rather than assuming one India-wide average.
Measure both devices under the same conditions
A plug-in energy meter is the practical way to compare an already-owned Pi and laptop. Measure at the wall so the result includes the power supply and connected equipment, rather than relying on a device or adapter label.

- Set up the Raspberry Pi with the board, power supply, storage, cooling, network connection, and peripherals you expect to use.
- Run the intended stream for a representative period. Record the meter’s average watts or accumulated kWh, following the meter’s instructions.
- Repeat the measurement with the spare laptop and its normal streaming setup.
- Keep the comparison fair: use the same video content, resolution, frame rate, network conditions, and connected peripherals where applicable. Note display state and software encoding load because these can affect a laptop’s draw.
- Apply the same household marginal tariff to each measured kWh figure. If you measured over a shorter period, use the measured average or energy for that period to calculate a daily or annual estimate.
For a laptop you already own, its purchase price is not an incremental cost of this setup. Electricity is only one part of the decision; account separately for any hardware bought specifically for streaming and consider the laptop’s battery and power behavior.
What Raspberry Pi power figures do—and do not—tell you
Raspberry Pi’s documentation lists 800 mA typical bare-board active current for Raspberry Pi 5 and recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply. The 27 W figure is the recommended supply rating, not the board’s typical operating draw and not the wall draw of a complete streaming setup. Attached USB devices and other hardware add to consumption.

The documentation also gives approximate workload figures for earlier boards, through Raspberry Pi 4. Those measurements used a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, with network connections varying by model, and excluded additional USB-device consumption. They are not a measured Pi 5 livestream result. Raspberry Pi notes, “The current consumed by each Raspberry Pi depends on the peripherals connected.”
Can the Pi or laptop handle your chosen YouTube stream?
The stream settings YouTube accepts are not proof that a particular device can encode them continuously. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary with resolution and codec: for H.264, for example, it recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps.

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a Pi or laptop can sustain the workload. Test the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to use, then monitor stream health. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start.” It also recommends testing with similar audio and movement to the planned stream.
Upload capacity matters as well as encoding. Check that your internet upload bandwidth can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom; a connection that barely meets the bitrate can make an otherwise capable device unreliable.

Compare more than the power reading
- Encoding suitability: Can the device maintain the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate without dropped frames or overheating?
- Recovery and monitoring: What happens after a power or network interruption? Consider restart behavior, storage durability, and whether someone can monitor stream health. YouTube’s documentation recommends testing and monitoring; it does not certify either device for unattended uptime.
- Internet stability: Is upload capacity sufficient with room above the stream bitrate, and is the network stable where the device will run?
- Total incremental cost: Include electricity at your applicable tariff and any equipment you need to buy specifically for the setup. The Pi’s required accessories may differ from what you already have available for the laptop.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for use cases such as screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware, and more involved productions. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s current Help page states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; check YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance for the applicable requirements. An official YouTube encoder listing describes one in-camera app as supporting continuous 24/7 streams; that product-specific description is not a promise of uninterrupted operation from a Pi or laptop.
