For a stereo YouTube Live stream of Indian classical music, set audio to 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz, AAC or MP3, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube publishes this as general live-encoder guidance; it does not specify a different audio bitrate for Indian classical music, India-based channels, or a 24/7 broadcast. Audio bitrate is separate from video bitrate.

Recommended audio settings for a stereo stream

Setting Recommended value
Audio bitrate 128 Kbps
Sample rate 44.1 kHz
Audio codec AAC or MP3
Bitrate mode CBR (constant bitrate)

These are YouTube Help’s published advanced audio recommendations for live encoding, accessed in 2026. They are platform configuration guidance, not the result of a listening test showing that 128 Kbps is uniquely optimal for Indian classical instruments. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Does Indian classical music need a higher bitrate?

YouTube’s encoder guidance does not set a genre-specific bitrate. For a stereo stream, use its general 128 Kbps recommendation rather than assuming that sitar, tabla, tanpura, vocals, or other instruments require a higher platform setting. The published guidance does not establish that raising the incoming audio bitrate will improve the audio viewers receive.

Choose stereo unless your production is actually configured for 5.1 surround sound. YouTube lists 384 Kbps and 48 kHz for 5.1; those values are not necessary settings for a stereo music stream. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists 5.1 support only for AAC.

Keep audio and video bitrate separate

The 128 Kbps figure is for stereo audio, not the entire stream. Select video bitrate according to the video codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s H.264 table recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are video ingestion recommendations for those profiles, not universal requirements; the table also has recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC.

A stream showing mostly static artwork may not need the same video profile as fast-moving footage, but YouTube does not publish a special bitrate table for still-image or music-only broadcasts. Match resolution and frame rate to what your encoder supports, and choose a video bitrate your sustained upload connection can carry reliably.

Configure and test the encoder

YouTube’s published settings cover RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Confirm that your encoder supports the codec and protocol combination you select. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate tables.

  1. Set the stereo audio track: choose AAC or MP3, CBR, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz.
  2. Choose a video profile independently: select codec, resolution, frame rate, and the matching video bitrate based on YouTube’s table and your upload capacity.
  3. Use the stream configuration YouTube provides: connect your encoder using the live-stream details in YouTube Studio. The YouTube Live Streaming API describes stream resources and refers creators to the encoder guidance. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams
  4. Test before going public: test audio and video movement similar to the intended program, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube specifically advises testing representative audio and movement before starting a live stream.
  5. Monitor the broadcast: watch stream health and messages during the event so you can identify connection or encoder problems.

Plan for a 24/7 broadcast

The audio bitrate recommendation does not change because a stream runs around the clock. A continuous broadcast does, however, need an operating arrangement that keeps sending the stream and can recover from interruptions. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance does not prescribe a particular uptime architecture, failover design, or hardware setup. Test your actual program and connection before relying on a long-running stream.

Troubleshooting common audio and stream issues

Symptom What to check
Audio sounds distorted or drops out Check the encoder’s audio format and bitrate, then review YouTube stream health and messages. Confirm the encoder and connection can sustain the selected settings.
Stream health reports connection trouble Check sustained upload capacity and reduce the video profile if necessary. YouTube recommends choosing quality the connection can reliably support.
Audio is configured for 5.1 unexpectedly For a stereo program, select stereo and use 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s 384 Kbps, 48 kHz recommendation is for 5.1 surround sound.
Encoder rejects a selected format or protocol Check that the encoder supports your chosen codec combination and use YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS settings. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted option.
