To find which part of an archived YouTube livestream was muted, open the stream in YouTube Studio, open its copyright notice, select View details, and inspect Copyright Details. Note the claimed material and the time range for each claim, then review those points in the video. A long archive can have multiple claims covering different segments.

Find the claimed segment in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and locate the archived livestream in your content list.
  2. Open the copyright notice and select View details. If the notice says “Muted due to copyrighted content,” follow it to Copyright Details, where YouTube identifies the material associated with the claim.
  3. For every listed claim, record the identified material, claimant if shown, and the segment’s start and end times. YouTube says different claimants can claim different portions of the same video, so do not assume one notice describes the entire archive.
  4. Play the archive around each reported boundary. Check what is actually audible—music, speech, sound effects, or other material—and whether the reported range matches what you hear.

A claim identifies material matched by YouTube; it does not, by itself, determine whether your use was unauthorized or whether a legal exception applies. If you believe a claim is mistaken or your use is permitted, review the claim and YouTube’s dispute process before editing or disputing it.

Why an archived stream can be muted after it ends

YouTube handles live matches and archive claims at different stages. During a broadcast, YouTube scans for third-party content matches. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder image, interruption, or termination if the material remains or other enforcement applies. By contrast, YouTube says Content ID claims on an archived live stream are made after the live stream is complete, if you choose to archive it. Its help page puts it this way: “Content ID claims are only made after you complete your live streams, if you decide to archive the video.” (YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.)

That distinction matters when the broadcast appeared to run normally but its saved video later shows a mute or claim: start with the archive’s claim details in Studio. If the live broadcast itself was interrupted or terminated, that is a separate live-enforcement issue.

Choose an edit carefully

Depending on the claim and the options YouTube presents, you may be able to trim the claimed segment, replace the song with Audio Library music, erase the song, or mute all audio in the segment. Preview the proposed edit before saving.

  • Trim the segment: removes the selected portion of the video. Check the cut points so you do not remove more of the archive than intended.
  • Replace the song: where available, substitutes music from YouTube’s Audio Library.
  • Erase the song: attempts to remove only the claimed song. YouTube notes this can fail when the song is difficult to separate.
  • Mute all audio in the segment: silences everything in that range, including speech and sound effects. YouTube says this is usually faster and more likely to clear the claim if all claimed audio is muted.

Preserve the original before saving

If you may need the unedited archive, download it or otherwise preserve a copy before applying an edit. YouTube says that, as of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes can no longer be undone using the former “Revert to original” feature. After an edit has processed, reload Studio and check both the video and claim status.

What live Content ID matching is—and is not

YouTube’s live Content ID matching is not the ordinary creator workflow for locating the muted part of an archived livestream. YouTube documents it as a feature for certain partners using Studio Content Manager. Access is granted at the Content Manager level, and the individual streaming channel must enable it. YouTube’s stated requirements include a proven record using Content ID, time-sensitive live content, global rights, and exclusive ownership of the stream material; its guidance excludes third-party content such as background music. The feature is intended to find copies of a rights holder’s own live stream in real time.

YouTube states: “These features are only available to partners who use YouTube Studio Content Manager.” (YouTube Help: Use Content ID matching on live streams.) For an ordinary channel diagnosing its own archived stream, use the archive’s copyright notice and claim details instead.
